Co nceived as a Hail Mary to save Studebaker auto company, the Avanti was designed literally on a napkin by Raymond Lowery, a giant in the automotive and industrial stylist occupation in the US. Ultimately, the Avanti was too little, too late to save Studebaker, but it was clearly a high water mark for successful automotive styling in the US. The fact that all of this was done on a shoestring budget makes it all the more remarkable. As a previous owner, I can unashamedly say that, additionally, the Avanti was a good car. My Avanti would regularly outrun my high school buddys 1964 Pontiac GTO with 3 duces.
