- 2015: 6/10
For the safest used buy, the 2015 model posts the highest confirmed score of 6/10.
Should I buy a used Scion FR-S now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Sweet-spot year: The 2014 model has the most listings. The Scion FR-S offers a focused, playful driving character that makes it especially appealing if you want a car built around enthusiast enjoyment.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: Any nimrod can go fast in a straight line, even in a minivan. But when it comes to applying the basic laws of physics to travel on four wheels, most people quickly get in over their heads. While the FR-S might not necessarily be fast in a stoplight drag race, it is more capable than most affordable performance cars of rounding corners with precision and executing drama-free stops, making this one fun little car to thrash. An angry-sounding 2.0-liter horizontally opposed (boxer) 4-cylinder engine thrums under the hood, capable of producing 200 hp, enough to get this lightweight, 2,758-pound car up to speed with plenty of oomph left in reserve.
- Tech: A touchscreen infotainment system is standard equipment, featuring a 6.1-inch screen, Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming, HD Radio and a USB port. My test car had the optional BeSpoke premium touchscreen infotainment system, which included voice-activated navigation, Aha Internet services via iTunes7 and Google Play, and access to social media platforms including Facebook and Twitter.
- Safety: Aside from a stability control system that allows for an impressive level of foolhardiness before stepping in to get the car under control, there are no additional safety features worth mentioning, not even a reversing camera.
- Starting price: Starting at just $25,670, the Scion FR-S comes with plenty of standard equipment, including 17-inch alloy wheels, power accessories, air conditioning and a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity and audio streaming, HD Radio, a USB port and an 8-speaker sound system.
If you're buying used today, the 2014 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for 2017 inventory to mature.

Car keeps its value. Super fun to drive, and can be driven daily with no issues. Low centre of gravity and great sport design always looks intimidating. Best car I’ve ever owned. Only thing to look for are the recalls on the first generation 2013 frz and brz. 2015 and up are super reliable

I would compare it to a Subaru BRZ and toyota gr86 because of the engine and style.

I love the car, it’s a lot of fun, it looks good, and sounds great even stock. But it’s very small! It’s a great car for how cheap, but I would definitely recommend looking into a BRZ or Toyota 86 for the interior features.

Great looks, Very fun to drive, great handling, very low cg, great car for the money, not a family car though... it's an entry level sports coupe and well designed for it's purpose. Great project car. Lots of power for a 2.0 Liter

Why it stands out
The 2015 Scion FR-S is a true sports car, built for drivers who want a car that feels happiest on a twisty road. It is described as a car meant to be driven hard and fast, and that character is the core of its appeal. Rather than trying to be a comfortable all-purpose vehicle, it focuses on delivering an engaging driving experience that puts a grin on your face in corners.
That focus comes with clear tradeoffs. The FR-S is not meant to coddle its driver or make productive trips to the big-box store, and its lack of practicality means it is best suited to buyers who do not need much everyday utility from the car itself. Owner feedback reinforces that personality, with praise for its fun driving experience, sporty design, and reliable performance, alongside complaints about a cramped interior, dated design, and a desire for more horsepower.
