This is a fantastic appliance vehicle. It gets very good gas mileage for a midsize. I have seen up to a 34 mpg tank average on long trips (San Antonio and back on one tank, A/C off). The only repair it has needed was a new A/C compressor because the electric clutch burned out and was not separately replaceable. The compressor swap took about an hour, and was incredibly easy. Although I have not done much in the way of repairs, all maintenance tasks were pretty trivial and everything appears to be laid out in an easily accessible way. Utility is decent, although the cargo space is not as ample as my former Roadmaster (which this car replaced), it is still sufficient for all of the hauling tasks I've had to date, and the roof rack is there for plywood or mattresses. It is comfortable, and while not powerful, it is sufficiently quick to keep up with Texas traffic or cruise at 75 comfortably. Steering is light, and the chassis's responsiveness feels more like a compact than a mid-size. This particular model also has a decent set of features that I wouldn't expect on a true economy car. Cruise control, auto-headlights, traction control, side curtain airbags, keyless entry + alarm, power locks and windows. It's no luxury car, but I've long since learned that luxury does not equal reliability or ease of repair.

This car has over 146,000 miles and still runs as well as when I bought it. The only major work done has been replacement of ignition switch (at time of purchase) and new hood latch. The 4-cylinder is great on gas (32-36 mph on highway) and has great tork.

I absolutely love this car. I've had it for about 4 years and it has been very dependable. I've had minor work done such as brakes and getting the A/C fixed and it's held up very well. It's an amazing car.

Overview
The L-Series came at an important time for customers wondering when Saturn would expand a compact-heavy lineup. This midsize model came in sedan and wagon trims, and reviewers felt that its features stacked up reasonably well against the Accord and Camry. However, experts questioned whether this model had come a little too late to make an impression in the market. Saturn needed to make up for lost time in promoting a solid product.
The L-Series changed its name to the L300 for 2004.
