The Saab 9000 is celebrated by owners for its performance, comfort, and spacious interior, making it a popular choice for long journeys. Many drivers appreciate its powerful acceleration and impressive handling, particularly in the turbo models. However, concerns about high maintenance costs and occasional reliability issues have been noted, especially regarding parts availability. Overall, its blend of driving enjoyment and comfort has made it a well-regarded option among used car shoppers, despite some drawbacks.

Engine can accumulate thousands of miles trouble-free, turbo must be well maintained. Give a close look to the various seals and probable oil leaks. Performance is there, handling not bad. If seeking economy, look elsewhere. Turbo is thirsty for gasoline.
This was my first front wheel drive car. It was my first automatic also. I loved the car for the combination of its good looks, good performance, great utility & space. The 160hp turbo in-line 4 engine was surprisingly strong and fast. The rear hatchback and the folding rear seats gave great utility. Interior was very tastfully done. Saab 9000 shared its chasis with Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema and Alfa Romeo 164. Saab 9000 looks very similar to Croma and Thema, but Alfa opted to only use the chasis and put on a very different body 164 alone looks distinctive. Of the 3 that did look similar, I think 9000 looked best.
See above, but other items of note: : Impeccable safety and winter handling : Seats are extremely comfortable and the leather is designer quality : Very solid and well-built feel and thick body metal (not vulnerable to hail) : Hatch and cargo capacity are very helpful : Back seat legroom is hard to find in good sporty cars like this : Only faults are lack of glovebox and cabin storage
This is a very solid, comfortable car. It feels great on the road, and has excellent acceleration, handling, and braking. The interior space easily rivals that of an Impala or a Concorde, and the 2.3 L 4-cylinder engine gives this two-ton car more than enough power. It is 16 years old and has 210,000 miles on it, but it drives like a late-model car and looks great when parked.
It's not a rocketship, but open-road performance is perfectly adequate. Makes Max torque at 3200rpm, which is about 130kph in 5th. Which means overtaking is quite effortless, as it's all HP from then upwards anyway. Overtaking a B-double semi on the highway, going from 110 to 140+ is fast and effortless. I bought this car as a cheapie with 172 thou k's (about 107,000 miles) on the clock. It has, over the past 5yrs been extremely reliable. Uses no oil; good economy. Have replaced headlight relay switch, radiator, exhaust system over the years, and recently coolant pump, harmonic balancer, serpentine belt and coolant hose coupling. Runs like a dream again. Handling and brakes are great - this was an AUS$ 43k car when new in 92/93, and still has many safety features found in much newer cars. It's roomy (5 adults easy), has great luggage capacity thanks to hatch and split-fold rear seat; has been a fantastic workhorse for me and has taken me touring safely all over Tasmania, Victoria, Outback NSW and South Australia. It's a keeper. Interior trim is looking a little tired now, but it is nearly 20yrs old. I don't drive like a maniac, but it can be fun in the twisties and the 2.3l EFI DOHC engine likes to rev. I check and service it regularly. Oil after 5,000klm is still clear (ie doesn't go black and sludgy), so I think there's a few good years left in the old girl yet. I'm now up to 230,000k. Also not too heavy on tyres for a FWD. I commute to work, and often tour, by motorcycle, so it doesn't get used a huge amount. When I moved house 2yrs ago, I did 40trips with this car towing a trailer between old and new places. It's carried so much gardening gear from the hardware store it's not funny. It's more of a convenience and shopping trolley for me these days, unless we plan a longer trip and the bikes won't do. While a bit has been spent on maintenance lately, I figure it's still a good, solid car.
