Why it stands out
The 2018 RAM 3500 stands out as a heavy-duty truck that had already moved well beyond bare-bones work-truck duty by the end of its generation. It combined serious capability with a more upscale feel, and the generation’s final-year updates brought useful tech such as HD Radio, a 4G LTE modem and hotspot provided by AT&T Wireless, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the Uconnect 8.4 infotainment system with an upgraded user interface. That mix makes it appealing to buyers who want a truck that can still handle demanding jobs while feeling more modern inside.
Its strengths are rooted in the hardware underneath. The 2018 RAM 3500 could tow nearly 30,000 pounds depending on configuration, and the generation’s engine lineup included the 6.4-liter Hemi V8 and the 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel. The truck also offered a wide range of cab and bed configurations, 2WD and 4WD drivetrains, and optional dual rear wheels, which helped it fit a broad range of heavy-duty needs. Owners also tend to praise its power, comfortable ride, sturdy build, and thoughtful design.
There are tradeoffs, though. The 2018 RAM 3500’s massive proportions can be difficult to manage in towns and cities, and the diesel engine is noisy. Safety technology is also described as limited, so while it is a strong and comfortable heavy-duty pickup, it is not the most compact or the most advanced choice in every respect.
