(7 reviews)well, i havnt quite finished putting it back together yet, but i love it. its very powerful and rumbles like the V8 that it is. I cant wait to finish it. its my dream car. what else do i say for now?
The 1956 Pontiac I own is a great car. Styling is awesome but not as well styled as the 57 or 58 model years. Performance on all 56 Pontiacs was great. they all had the same basic V8 motor. high compression and 3 or 4 speed automatics or the 3 speed manual. Mine has the 4 speed auto with overdrive, the basic V8 pushing 205 HP and gets 20 MPG on the highway. Has kickdown up to 65 mph and will go over 100 mph. Interiors are very nice on these cars. Handling and steering is better then on the Chevys of comparable years. Mine has all original documentation and still is mechanically like it was 52 years ago. Has the underseat recirculating heater, power antenna, push button radio, clock, power steering and brakes, pedal operated windshield washer, factory exhaust tips, taillight brows, and backup lights. this car is highly optioned for a 1956. Very good car to own and drive around every day if need be.
"The Chief" is a legend in our family. We used to take family vacations with mom, dad, grandma, grandpa & FOUR kids in the chief. We had it for over 20 years & we still talk about it. I wish we still had it, but it was a car that we used everyday & the Ohio winters finally got to it.
Bought this car when I was in high school and opted to not drive in the winters. The interior is falling apart but mechanically it's a beast. 389ci engine with Tri Power carb setup. Puts out about 320hp, that will drastically increase upon rebuild. I recently replaced the original Hydramatic transmission with a TH350.
2 door sedan, 283 original Chev V8, Powerglide automatic (2 speed), push- button radio, dual sport mirrors, Convience Package, Heater/Defroster, Air - if you roll down the windows, cruise - if you put a brick on the pedal, Tilt - we won't go there, 19 piece front bumper/grill. Full wheel discs, Original Jack, Owner's manual and bill of sale from August 1957. Newer paint, upholstery, transmission (only lasted 31 years...sheesh). This car has plenty of power even with a 2 bbl carb. Handles well...in a straight line. Turns a bit like the Queen Mary. Stops on a dime, if you throw the dime about a quarter mile ahead of you. All in all, a great ride.
