Customer summary
The Mercedes-Benz R-Class has consistently impressed owners with its spaciousness, comfort, and performance across all model years. Many drivers love the elegant design, luxury features, and safety components that make it a great choice for families. However, some critiques mention concerns about fuel economy and maintenance costs, particularly with used models. Overall, it’s seen as a stylish and practical alternative to traditional minivans and SUVs, though the pricing can be a bit high, especially for well-maintained units.

Cargo space in tremendous, and the ability to fold down all the seats to a flat even surface makes hauling things incredibly easy. Rear lift gate with it's remote key fob access makes loading and unloading groceries a breeze. Gets a respectable 19-20 mpg in the city, and 26 and 1/2 mpg on the highway.

The styling is great. The interior is as quiet as when I bought it. The 3rd row seats are designed for adults to use, not just kids under 5 years old. Its a very reliable car with just regular scheduled maintenance.

This car is the most comfortable, convenient and reliable car. We have had zero problems with this car in the five years we've had it. The kids love the huge moonroof. Fuel economy is great for an SUV and it has plenty of cargo room.

Overview
About the Mercedes-Benz R-Class
According to the automaker, the Mercedes-Benz R-Class was a luxury three-row crossover. To everyone else, the R-Class looked more or less like a minivan. Identity crisis aside, the Alabama-built R-Class was sold in the U.S. market for model years 2006 through 2012. With seating for up to seven passengers, the roomy R-Class was known for its plush interior, comfortable ride, and decent fuel economy.
What are the advantages of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class?
- Spacious and versatile interior
- Fuel-efficient powertrains
- Luxury amenities
- Comfortable and composed ride quality
What is the best Mercedes-Benz R-Class model year?
Early R-Class vehicles were prone to various, if minor, electronic issues so we recommend the 2011 R-Class (R350). Refreshed for the model year, the R-Class received a new front end from headlamps to hood, updated its interior materials, and was outfitted with a new instrument cluster. By now, all R-Class models came standard with six-passenger seating and all-wheel drive with engine options including a fuel-efficient turbo-diesel.
What are the disadvantages of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class?
- Ambiguous design
- Price and ownership costs
- Less interior volume than standard minivans
- Cumbersome infotainment interface
Comparison: Is the Mercedes-Benz R-Class better than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
Comparing an all-wheel-drive crossover-minivan-wagon to a rear-wheel-drive compact car isn’t exactly apples-to-apples. Where the R-Class offers the benefits of a larger cabin, upscale materials, and towing capability, the C-Class is a flagship sedan with better driving dynamics, sleeker styling, and more advanced technology. Here the R-Class would be the “better” vehicle if you needed three rows of seats instead of two.
Is the Mercedes-Benz R-Class a reliable car?
The R-Class receives a score of “average” for expected quality and reliability, though many owners will argue that their vehicles have encountered few or any problems. Being a luxury marque, dealership costs for basic service will be high but with regular maintenance, the R-Class sounds like a solid long-term family vehicle.
Is the Mercedes-Benz R-Class worth the cost?
Seemingly underappreciated (and/or misunderstood) during its time, the R-Class has proven to be a comfortable family hauler disguised as a solidly-built luxury car.
