Mazda RX-8 Overview
When it was introduced in 2004, the Mazda RX-8 four-seat sport coupe had a lot riding (so to speak) on its 18-inch wheels. It was the successor to the RX-7, which was probably the most memorable and iconic car Mazda has ever made. And although the RX-8 hasn't quite developed the buzz that surrounded the RX-7, it's certainly a worthy 21st century standard-bearer of the RX name.
In fact, the RX-8 is a true descendant of its automotive ancestors, since like the RX-7, as well as Mazda's other RX cars, such as the RX-2 and the RX-3 (both produced in the 1970s), the RX-8 is powered by a rotary engine - in this case, a small, super-lightweight engine called the Renesis. Mazda notes that the Renesis engine is smaller than the car's transmission, yet the 2007 model produces 232 horsepower (212 with the Sport AT automatic transmission) and provides plenty of power under the pedal (torque) through the power range.
Mazda notes that its 1.3-liter Renesis rotary engine has no pistons or valves, but instead consists only of two rotors and a crankshaft that continually rotate inside a housing to create combustion. As a result, the engine gives off a distinctive hum, rather than the typical sound of an internal combustion engine.
In its first year, the RX-8 was available as a solitary model available with either a six-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. Standard features included power windows, power door locks, air conditioning, antilock brakes, a CD player, and front, side, and curtain airbags for the driver and passenger.
In 2005, Mazda added a Shinka edition to the RX-8 lineup. It was equipped with leather seats and antilock brakes, among other features. In 2007, the lineup was revised again to include three trims. The entry-level Sport package included air conditioning, cruise control, a leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, and antilock brakes, while the mid-level Touring package added Xenon headlights, a day/night rear-view mirror, and Dynamic Stability Control with traction control. The top-of-the-line Grand Touring version came with such features as heated leather seats, an advanced keyless entry system, heated exterior mirrors, a power sliding moonroof, and a nine-speaker Bose premium audio system.
Drivers and reviewers alike agree that the RX-8 is an agile, well-balanced, comfortable, and stylish four-seat sport coupe, and many consider it to be among the best vehicles on the road.

The Mazda RX-8 has been loved by drivers for its unique rotary engine, sporty handling, and overall fun driving experience across all model years. Owners appreciate the quick acceleration, excellent cornering capability, and stylish design. However, many have pointed out its poor fuel economy and high maintenance requirements, which can deter potential buyers looking for practicality. While it’s a standout car in terms of performance and aesthetics, it’s best suited for enthusiasts who can handle the quirks associated with its rotary engine.

I’ve had twoRX8 models and loved their control, speed and safety. My only issue is that they don’t hold the road as well when it’s raining. I totaled my last one on an incline and the highway was slick with rain. I spun out and hit a tree. I walked away with no injuries. Liked that part!
I was involved in a fatality car wreck. This car saved my life. The other driver died on the scene.
Love the looks and the "freestyle" back doors. Great fun to drive. Not great off the line but handles like a dream. Quality seems well above average. Gas mileage not that great but not bad for a sports car. I have the automatic but it has manual shift option that gives the feel of a manual. I would recommend taking one for a test drive and make up your own minds.
Great fun. Superb handling. Highly recommended
PROS: This is a fast and extremely well handling car, it grips the road almost like a 240sx. 250 BHP and Revs to 9k RPM!!!Sexy and sporty at the same time. All the power of a coupe sports car but has the luxury of a sedan. 4 doors make it easy to fit more than 2 people in the car without having to move the seat. Heated seats are definitely a plus. Bose sound system has just enough bass not to blow your ear drums and the stereo goes to 34 (pretty damn loud) without sacrificing music quality. CONS: If you don't know anything about the rotary engine I'd suggest learning. you have to add non-synthetic oil every once and a while because oil is injected into the engine along with fuel to keep the apex seals lubricated. Gas mileage is not what you would expect it to be for such a small car with a 1.3L engine. Rotary's run rich and you have to use 91+ octane or your Check Engine Light will come up with multiple codes.
Mazda RX-8 FAQs
Are Mazda RX-8s reliable?
The Mazda RX-8 has a reputation for being less reliable, primarily due to issues with its unique high-performance rotary engine. Many owners report significant problems starting around 60,000 miles. While the RX-8 offers a thrilling driving experience, potential buyers should be aware of these reliability concerns and the possible need for more frequent maintenance.
What years or the RX-8 should be avoided?
It's generally recommended to avoid the first generation of the Mazda RX-8, produced from 2004 to 2008, due to higher reported problems and lower reliability. The second generation, from 2009 to 2011, tends to have fewer complaints and better reliability, making it a more advisable option if you're considering an RX-8.
Are Mazda RX-8s good cars?
The Mazda RX-8 is a sleek and powerful sports car with a design reminiscent of European coupes. While it offers an exciting driving experience, the RX-8 can be costly to run, particularly in terms of fuel consumption. Potential buyers should weigh the car's performance and style against its higher running costs.
How long do RX-8 engines last?
The engine lifespan of the Mazda RX-8 can be quite variable. While some engines can last over 100,000 miles with proper care, others may experience significant issues much earlier. The rotary engine's unique design requires meticulous maintenance, and there is no single modification or fix that guarantees doubling the engine's lifespan. Regular and thorough maintenance is key to achieving the best longevity from an RX-8 engine.
