Lincoln's sportiest car is also its least expensive. Introduced in 2000, the Lincoln LS sought to combine a sporty drive with a mid-sized luxury sedan to compete with entries from BMW and Mercedes and appeal to a younger audience. Though somewhat less refined from an engineering and styling standpoint, the rear-wheel drive LS held its own with a choice of 3.0 V6 or 3.9 V8 engine, winning Motor Trend's Car of the Year award. Since 2003, it has consistently won high marks from both the NHTSA and Insurance Institute, thanks to standard ABS brakes, traction control, and dual front-side airbags. Stability control and side curtain bags are available as options. Though existing in the shadow of its German rivals, the Lincoln LS impressed owners with its V8 power, smooth handling, and comfortable interior. If fuel-economy and backseat legroom could have been improved, the mid-sized luxury sedan might have won over more fans.
