Buick Grand National Overview

The first year Buick offered the Grand National was 1982. It was a two-tone dark grey and light grey paint scheme, and the turbocharged engine was an option very few of these cars were built with. The Grand National model was not offered in 1983.

In 1984, the Grand National returned, this time in the all-black color scheme that's become its signature. Electronic fuel injection was offered for the first time with the turbo V6 engine.

In 1986 and 1987, an intercooler was added to the engine package, which raised the output to a dramatically underrated 235 hp. This is the version on which the legend is based. For domestic U.S. production, the Grand National (and the non-black turbo Regal versions) was the fastest accelerating American car you could buy. Yes, faster than the Camaro, the Mustang, and the Corvette (although with modifications, all of those competitors could be made considerably faster).

In addition to the Grand National, in 1987 Buick did a limited production run of 547 specially prepped Grand Nationals that were badged as the "GNX." Due to its limited production numbers, the GNX became more of a collector's car, although the performance tweaks it received made it even faster than the standard Grand National. Contrary to popular conception, the GNX was originally built with a single turbocharger, despite what you might have heard about someone's buddy's uncle's best friend who had a twin-turbo GNX that had a bazillion horsepower, etc.

I own a 1986 Regal T-type and a 1987 WE4. While neither of these cars should be called a Grand National, very few non-owners are aware that there were other turbo Regals. I'm sorry for not properly citing my sources, but perhaps someone else will submit supporting or disagreeing information?

Outside of the latest line-up of new muscle cars and the great muscle cars of the 60's and early 70's, this was THE greatest muscle car ever built. It isn't the uniqueness or the stealth-like appearance or performance, it's what can be done to bring this car to true supercar status on a shoestring budget. This car epitomizes straight line exhileration--velcro cheek straps not included.

Always wanted one. Love the 80s G body cars. Car rides beautiful and very comfortable . The GN is become a real cult classic and values are going up. Don't car though since I'm not selling it. Drive one if you ever get the chance

One...mean...car. The "Darth Buick" is one car not to be messed with. It is a "sleeper" only to those that are not too knowledgeable concerning cars. The stance, the blackest black ever seen on a car, '80's brick styling, are just a few ways this car is special. Hit the gas...hold on - but do not expect to hear a rumble, more like a surge of air that the turbo is sucking up. If you want compliments on what you drive from all ages, this is the car for you. Once you drive one, you hate getting out of it. GNs may all be black, but each owner adds their own touches. Vader would be proud to drive this one around the Death Star.

This car is smooth and easy to drive. This car accelerates well but since it was the fastest production car of the 1980s (even including the Corvette) it should. This car tends to draw a crowd at car shows. This model has been called the Darth Vader of cars. It has 60K miles.

The 1987 Buick Grand National is hell on four wheels. It has a 3.8 SFI Turboed V6 which puts out 246 bhp, and arounf 355 ft-lbs of torque, which is great to launch hard off the line. Its one of the most renowned cars among muscle car enthusiasts. The interior is pretty basic, but the exterior is a Buick Regal on steriods, its just plain aggresive. A price of 1987 Grand National is between 19-24k. Is it fun to drive? HELL YEAH!
