What should I look for when buying a used BMW 4 Series?

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2021 models.

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: Active Driving Assistant is standard on every 4 Series Gran Coupe, and it includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assistance, an active blind-spot warning system, and rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: iDrive 7 with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an Intelligent Personal Assistant.
• Fuel efficiency: 25.3 mpg on our evaluation loop, considerably less than the official EPA fuel economy estimate of 28 mpg in combined driving.

Which BMW 4 Series trim should I buy?

The 2022 BMW 4 Series offers these trims:

• 430i: The 430i is the value pick, with Sport or M Sport styling, rear-wheel drive at launch, and the core 4 Series driving experience.
• M440i: The M440i adds M Performance design, Shadowline trim treatment, all-wheel drive at launch, and the available Driving Assistance Professional Package, plus upgrades such as adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane-centering assistance, lane-change assistance, evasive steering assistance, front cross-traffic alert, Traffic Jam Assistant, and available Parking Assistant Plus.

What BMW 4 Series do most buyers choose?

The BMW 4 Series years with the most listings are 2025, 2023, and 2024.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they combine newer features, broader availability, and strong pricing relative to their original equipment levels. More listings also give you more room to compare trims, colors, and deal quality before you buy.

What is the BMW 4 Series's resale value?

Most model years are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used because it creates more room for value. The declines are generally in the mid-single digits, with a few larger drops near the top of the list. A handful of older years have changed less, which suggests they have been holding value a bit better than the rest.

The 2015, 2016, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the BMW 4 Series safe?

• 2022: 8/10
• 2021: 6/10
• 2015: 7/10
• 2014: 7/10

Active Driving Assistant is standard on every 4 Series Gran Coupe.

For the safest used buy, the 2022 model posts the highest confirmed score of 8/10.

Should I buy a used BMW 4 Series now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2026 model is at −5.04% versus a year ago, and the 2025 model is at −6.07%.
• Deal availability: The 2025 model has 36.7% good and great deals.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $47,473. The BMW 4 Series offers a stylish, premium driving experience with strong road manners and a distinctive design that helps it stand apart from more conventional luxury cars.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The 4 Series Gran Coupe and the Kia Stinger each weigh more than 4,000 pounds in top specification, but the BMW doesn't feel like it; our 430i RWD test vehicle had a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine making 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque.
• Tech: The standard Live Cockpit Professional setup pairs a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and the iDrive 7 system also includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
• Safety: Active Driving Assistant is standard on every 4 Series Gran Coupe, and the M440i adds the available Driving Assistance Professional Package with adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane-centering assistance, lane-change assistance, evasive steering assistance, front cross-traffic alert, and Traffic Jam Assistant.
• Starting price: Our Sunset Orange 430i test vehicle included an extra-cost paint charge, leather seats, a Shadowline Package, a Premium Package, a Parking Assistance Package, an M Sport Package, and a Dynamic Handling Package, bringing its price to $57,295, including a $995 destination charge.

If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
