The BMW 2 Series's current nationwide average price is $31,691, and its nationwide average price reached a low of $30,371 over the past year.

Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.

Is the BMW 2 Series a good car?

Yes — the BMW 2 Series earns strong marks from owners across the lineup, and it consistently delivers the sporty character shoppers expect from a small BMW.

The all-generations owner rating is 4.96/5 across every model year in the data.

Owners repeatedly praise the 2 Series for its performance, sharp handling, and sporty feel, along with the comfort and luxury touches that make it easy to enjoy every day. Across the model years, the car also stands out for its driver-focused personality and strong sense of agility.

Expert reviews rate the 2015 and 2022 models among the highest across all years.

The main trade-offs are the firm ride, the cramped back seat, and premium-car ownership costs that can include higher maintenance expenses and premium fuel requirements.

35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

Are BMW 2 Series models reliable?

Owners consistently rate the BMW 2 Series highly for its performance, handling, and everyday drivability, and expert commentary reinforces that it delivers a sporty, engaging ownership experience. Across the lineup, the car’s appeal comes through as a blend of strong driving character and usable comfort.

  • Owners rate the BMW 2 Series between 4.67 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.

For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is most worth watching on higher-mileage examples, so a careful history check and maintenance review can go a long way.

What should I look for when buying a used BMW 2 Series?

Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 84% — always verify the vehicle history report.

202695.9%
202595.5%
202493.8%

201859.5%
201755.6%

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.

Key things to evaluate:

  • Infotainment: 2025 models come with a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system.
  • Fuel efficiency: The 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The entry level 228 xDrive Gran Coupe is rated at 241 horsepower, which is 13 hp more than the previous version’s powertrain. The M235 xDrive Gran Coupe we drove increases output to 312 hp, which is 10 hp more than its predecessor. These second-generation Gran Coupes feature a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and all-wheel-drive (AWD) is standard. An even more affordable front-wheel-drive (FWD) 228 Gran Coupe is due for the 2026 model year, though. In addition to the bumped-up power, the BMW M235 further benefits from upgraded brakes, a rear spoiler, unique interior trim, sport seats, and a sport steering wheel. As noted above, our particular Gran Coupe also came with the optional M Performance package that adds a sport suspension, M brakes, M Sport seats, and 19-inch wheels with performance tires that enable a higher top speed of 155 mph (compared to 130 mph for other tire options). BMW claims the M235 will accelerate to 60 mph in a quick 4.5 seconds, while the 228 should get there in 6 seconds. Power is plentiful enough that you'll never feel the need to floor the pedal when launching up a freeway onramp or when passing slower traffic. Gear changes are quick and smooth in these conditions, and unlike some other dual-clutch transmissions, the Gran Coupe is also fairly smooth and predictable at parking-lot speeds. Brake pedal effort is lighter than we'd expect from a sporty BMW, but when called upon, the brakes bring this small sedan to a very quick stop and we didn’t experience any performance loss with heavy use. On a challenging, twisty road, the xDrive AWD system does an admirable job of eliminating the front-end traction issues that limit the cornering performance of the Mini Cooper. There's plenty of grip to accelerate out of a curve, though the Gran Coupe still has a hint of the telltale nose-heaviness of its FWD-derived platform. All Gran Coupe models come standard with adaptive dampers, which allow you to choose between softer or firmer settings. With the M Performance package, it's biased more toward the firm side and tends to transmit a lot of jostling into the cabin. It's not so stiff as to be considered harsh, though. The ride quality is comfortable enough for long-distance drives, though some prominent seams in the road surface can cause some noticeable thumps through the seat. The cabin also remains fairly calm when cruising, with wind noise well silenced and road noise only becoming noticeable on coarser asphalt. You won't mistake the engine for anything but a four-cylinder, but it only makes itself known under aggressive acceleration.

Which BMW 2 Series trim should I buy?

The 2025 BMW 2 Series offers these trims:

  • 228 xDrive Gran Coupe: This entry-level trim brings the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, 241 horsepower, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, standard all-wheel drive, adaptive dampers, a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system. It suits you if you want the most affordable way into the lineup with a strong standard feature set.
  • M235 xDrive Gran Coupe: This trim adds 312 horsepower, upgraded brakes, a rear spoiler, unique interior trim, sport seats, and a sport steering wheel, with the optional M Performance package bringing a sport suspension, M brakes, M Sport seats, and 19-inch wheels with performance tires. It is the best-value choice if you want the most performance and the most aggressive hardware in the range.

What BMW 2 Series do most buyers choose?

The BMW 2 Series years with the most listings are 2025, 2026, and 2024.

Model YearTotal ListingsGood + Great Deals %
20251,55136.7%
20261,25837.6%
20241,06836.8%
202372834.5%
202769635.9%
202266435.7%

Higher-volume years usually give you more choices, which can make it easier to compare trims, mileage, and pricing. They also tend to be the years shoppers focus on when they want a broad mix of availability and value.

What is the BMW 2 Series's resale value?

Model YearCurrent Avg. PriceYear-Over-Year Change
2025$37,266−17.76%
2021$21,485−10.51%
2022$25,709−8.19%
2023$33,629−7.05%
2024$34,046−6.02%
2016$16,166−3.95%
2020$22,805−3.52%
2015$15,529+1.45%
2017$18,868+2.86%
2018$22,007+4.02%

Most model years in this set are moving lower year over year, which is good news if you want to buy used. A few older years are rising, showing that some examples are still in demand and holding value well. Overall, the pattern favors shoppers who want to time a purchase around softer pricing on newer models.

The 2018, 2017, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

Is the BMW 2 Series safe?

  • 2025: 6/10
  • 2022: 8/10
  • 2021: 8/10
  • 2020: 9/10
  • 2015: 8/10

For the safest used buy, the 2020 model posts the highest confirmed score of 9/10.

Should I buy a used BMW 2 Series now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

  • Price trend: The 2025 model is at −17.76% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −6.02%.
  • Deal availability: The 2025 model has 36.7% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 36.8%.
  • Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $37,266. The BMW 2 Series offers a sporty, driver-focused character that makes it appealing if you want a compact premium car with real enthusiast appeal.

Consider waiting if:

  • Powertrain/efficiency: The 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the entry level 228 xDrive Gran Coupe is rated at 241 horsepower, and the M235 xDrive Gran Coupe increases output to 312 hp.
  • Tech: All 2 Series Gran Coupe models come standard with a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless versions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system.
  • Safety: The 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe comes with standard advanced safety and driver assistance features like forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, front and rear parking proximity sensors, and a semi-automated parking system.
  • Starting price: Pricing for the 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe starts at $42,775 for the entry-level 228 xDrive Gran Coupe.

If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
