Why it stands out

The 2026 Volkswagen Jetta GLI stands out because it keeps the GLI formula focused on performance, practicality, and value in a compact sedan package. It is the only new Jetta GLI available with a six-speed manual transmission, and it comes standard with a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, automatic headlights and wipers, App-Connect smartphone integration, wireless charging, and a Digital Cockpit Pro configurable driver display. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a driver-focused car that still feels well equipped for everyday use.

It also brings the hardware that gives the GLI its sporting character. Volkswagen’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder produces 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and the car uses a front-wheel-drive layout with a VAQ electronically controlled, torque-sensing limited-slip differential. The GLI also gets sports suspension with a half-inch lower ride height, bigger brakes, and more aggressive exterior styling than the standard Jetta, including unique 18-inch alloy wheels and a blacked-out honeycomb grille with red accents. For buyers who want a sedan that is more engaging than the ordinary compact car, those details are a big part of the appeal.

There are trade-offs, though. The cabin uses hard plastics throughout, and only the top-spec Autobahn trim gets the 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The model also carries a less-than-stellar reputation for reliability and can be more expensive to maintain than Japanese or domestic rivals. Even so, the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta GLI remains distinctive because it blends everyday usability with genuine enthusiast appeal in a way few compact sedans still do.
