Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 a good car?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 earns an expert rating of 6.17/10. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

It’s a car that puts driver engagement first and practicality last, so you’re buying it for the way it drives rather than for everyday versatility. The GR86 delivers fantastic handling, especially at the limit, and its quick-revving engine and engaging manual transmission help make modest power feel lively.

The trade-offs are clear: cargo and passenger space are tight, and the ride can get hard. Even so, if you want a fun car to drive without relying on big power, this is one of the strongest choices in its lane.

Good and great deals account for 24.8% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 reliable?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 is built around a straightforward gas powertrain and a relatively simple sports-car mission, which can be a plus for long-term ownership. Its performance setup is focused on balance and driver involvement rather than complexity, and the standard Torsen limited-slip rear differential helps put power down effectively.

Toyota also includes a year of Service Connect, which provides vehicle health reports and maintenance updates. That can help you stay ahead of routine upkeep while the car is still new to you.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about sophistication and more about how the car was driven and maintained, since this is the kind of vehicle that may have seen enthusiastic use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Toyota GR86?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the report carefully, because a sports car like this may have been driven hard even if it has no accident history. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on tires, brakes, suspension, and signs of track or autocross use. You’ll also want to pay close attention to ride quality and cabin condition, since this model’s firm setup can make wear and abuse easier to spot.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Core trim is the simplest version, with cloth upholstery and fewer upscale touches, while the Premium adds synthetic suede and leather upholstery, black wheels, and an eight-speaker audio system. The Yuzu Edition adds yellow-themed styling, matte-black wheels, and a commemorative plaque, so it’s more of a special appearance-and-performance package than a pure value play.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.4-liter flat-four with 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. The manual is the enthusiast choice, while the automatic is the better pick for fuel economy.
• Safety package: The standard suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic models add rear parking sensors, and the Premium and Yuzu Edition add blind-spot monitors.
• Infotainment: Every GR86 gets an eight-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You also get a 7-inch digital instrument cluster with Sport and Track layouts, plus Toyota Service Connect, Safety Connect, and Remote Connect for a year.
• Fuel efficiency: Automatic models are rated at 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. With the manual, those figures drop to 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.

Which 2026 Toyota GR86 trim should I buy?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Premium, and Yuzu Edition.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the essential GR86 experience with the standard cloth interior and the base tire setup. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and care most about the driving feel rather than extra equipment.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers. It adds synthetic suede and leather upholstery, black wheels, and the summer-performance tires that help the car feel sharper on the road and track.
• Yuzu Edition: This is the most distinctive version, with matte-black wheels, Brembo brakes, Sachs dampers, yellow interior stitching, black interior trim, a commemorative plaque, and Yuzu yellow paint. It’s the pick if you want the most special-looking GR86 and are willing to pay for it.

The Premium and Yuzu Edition also get blind-spot monitors.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Toyota GR86?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.

• Deal availability: 24.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 206 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 79.6% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 safe?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 comes with a basic level of standard safety equipment and has an incomplete crash-test record.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic-transmission models add rear parking sensors, while the Premium and Yuzu Edition add blind-spot monitors.

Because the crash-test record is incomplete, you should lean more heavily on the standard driver-assistance features and your own inspection of the car’s condition. The lack of a fuller test record is a real caveat for cautious buyers.

Should I buy a 2026 Toyota GR86 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 24.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• It delivers standout handling and a quick-revving, fun-focused driving experience.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It offers affordable two-door fun with a manual transmission option.

The bottom line: If you want the sharpest current-year shopping pool and the GR86’s core appeal is exactly what you’re after, the 2026 is the one to target. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2025 is worth a look because it keeps the same basic enthusiast formula while potentially opening up more value-oriented listings.
