Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 a good car?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 earns an expert rating of 6.17/10. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

It’s a strong fit if you want a car that puts driver engagement first and practicality last. The GR86 delivers fantastic handling, especially at the limit, and its quick-revving engine is tuned to make modest power feel entertaining rather than merely adequate. You also get an engaging manual transmission, plus tire choices that let you lean toward tail-out fun or quicker track times.

The trade-offs are clear: cargo and passenger space are tight, power is modest, and the ride can get hard. If you care most about steering feel, balance, and driving enjoyment, those compromises are easier to accept.

Good and great deals account for 25.0% of listings, which suggests there’s at least some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 reliable?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 is presented as a simple, driver-focused sports car, and that simplicity can work in your favor for long-term ownership. Its performance setup is straightforward, with a naturally modest power output and a standard limited-slip rear differential helping put power down effectively. The manual transmission is described as having short shifts, positive engagement, and a natural clutch feel, which points to a mechanical setup that should be easy to live with if you maintain it properly.

Toyota also includes a year of Service Connect, which provides vehicle health reports and maintenance updates. That can help you stay ahead of routine upkeep early in ownership.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that this is still a low-volume sports car with a firm ride and limited practicality, so condition and maintenance history matter more than they would on a mainstream commuter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Toyota GR86?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been driven hard or modified. Focus on tire wear, brake condition, suspension feel, and signs that the car has spent time on rough roads or at track events. Because the GR86 is a sports car with a firm ride and limited practicality, overall condition matters a lot.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Core trim uses cloth upholstery and standard all-season tires, while the Premium trim adds synthetic suede and leather upholstery, black wheels, and summer-performance tires. The Yuzu Edition adds its own appearance and performance touches, including matte-black wheels, Brembo brakes, Sachs dampers, yellow interior accent stitching, black interior trim, a commemorative plaque, and Yuzu yellow paint.
• Powertrain: The GR86 uses a 2.4-liter flat-four with 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. The manual is the enthusiast choice, and the standard Torsen limited-slip rear differential helps maximize traction.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic models add rear parking sensors, and the Premium and Yuzu get blind-spot monitors.
• Infotainment: You get an eight-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a 7-inch digital instrument cluster with Sport and Track layouts. Toyota also includes connected services for one year.
• Fuel efficiency: Automatic models are EPA-rated at 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. With the manual, those figures drop to 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.

Which 2026 Toyota GR86 trim should I buy?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Premium, and Yuzu Edition.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the essential GR86 experience with the standard manual-friendly setup and cloth upholstery. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and care most about the driving feel rather than extra comfort or appearance upgrades.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers. It adds synthetic suede and leather upholstery, black wheels, and summer-performance tires, which better match the car’s enthusiast character and improve grip for spirited driving.
• Yuzu Edition: This is the most distinctive choice, with matte-black wheels, Brembo brakes, Sachs dampers, yellow interior accent stitching, black interior trim, a commemorative plaque, and Yuzu yellow paint. It’s the pick if you want the most special-looking and most performance-focused factory version.

The Premium and Yuzu trims also get blind-spot monitors.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Toyota GR86?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting a flood of bargains.

• Deal availability: 25.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 196 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 82.1% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 safe?

The GR86 gets only a Good rating for its headlights and for its front crash prevention vehicle-to-pedestrian collision prevention systems in IIHS testing, and it hasn’t been subjected to the organization’s other tests.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic models add rear parking sensors, and the Premium and Yuzu trims add blind-spot monitors.

Because the crash-test record is incomplete, you should treat safety as a secondary strength rather than a major selling point.

Should I buy a 2026 Toyota GR86 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 25.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• It emphasizes driver engagement with fantastic handling, a quick-revving engine, and a manual transmission that makes the car especially fun.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It offers affordable sports-car fun with broad everyday appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the sharpest driver-focused version and you’re comfortable with the GR86’s tight cabin and firm ride, the 2026 is the one to target. If you’re mainly shopping for a low-cost, fun coupe and want to widen your search for value, the 2025 is still worth a look.
