Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 a good car?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 earns a 6.17/10 expert rating, and the standout strength is Performance at 9/10. It’s built around driver engagement, with fantastic handling, especially at the limit, and a quick-revving engine that makes modest power feel entertaining. The trade-off is that it puts practicality last, so you’re giving up cargo room, passenger space, and everyday comfort for a car that’s meant to be fun to drive. Good and great deals make up 22.8% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 reliable?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 is presented as a focused sports car with a basic safety and tech setup, so you should expect ownership to be more about enthusiast priorities than broad all-around convenience. Its performance character is centered on a quick-revving engine, a manual transmission that feels natural and engaging, and a standard limited-slip rear differential that helps put power down effectively. Toyota also includes a year of connected services, including vehicle health reports and maintenance updates, which adds some ownership convenience early on. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the car’s firm ride, tight cabin, and performance-first setup may make it less forgiving if you want a low-stress daily driver.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Toyota GR86?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the vehicle history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace documentation. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the suspension, tires, brakes, and cabin condition, especially if the car was driven hard or modified. Focus on whether the car feels tight and well-kept, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been maintained.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Core trim uses cloth upholstery and standard all-season tires, while the Premium adds synthetic suede and leather upholstery, black wheels, and summer-performance tires. The Yuzu Edition adds matte-black wheels, yellow interior stitching, black interior trim, a commemorative plaque, and Yuzu yellow paint.
• Powertrain: The GR86 uses a 2.4-liter flat-four with 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. The manual is the enthusiast choice, and the standard Torsen limited-slip rear differential helps maximize traction.
• Safety package: The standard suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic models add rear parking sensors, and the Premium and Yuzu get blind-spot monitors.
• Infotainment: You get an eight-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a 7-inch digital instrument cluster with Sport and Track layouts. Toyota also includes connected services for one year.
• Fuel efficiency: Automatic models are rated at 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. Manual models are rated at 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.

Which 2026 Toyota GR86 trim should I buy?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Premium, and Yuzu Edition.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the GR86 formula with the standard manual-friendly setup, cloth upholstery, and all-season tires. It makes sense if you want the lowest price and plan to keep the car simple.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the summer-performance tires, black wheels, and upgraded interior materials that better match the car’s enthusiast character.
• Yuzu Edition: This is the most distinctive choice, adding the special exterior and interior touches along with Brembo brakes and Sachs dampers. It suits you if you want the most exclusive version and are willing to pay more for it.

The Premium and Yuzu trims also get blind-spot monitors, while automatic models add rear parking sensors.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Toyota GR86?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully rather than rushing into the first decent listing.

• Deal availability: 22.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 193 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 80.8% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 safe?

The GR86 gets only a Good rating for its headlights and for its front crash prevention vehicle-to-pedestrian collision prevention systems in IIHS testing, and it hasn’t been subjected to the organization’s other tests. It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic models add rear parking sensors, and the Premium and Yuzu trims add blind-spot monitors. The limited crash-test record is a key caveat, so you should weigh the car’s safety equipment against its sports-car mission.

Should I buy a 2026 Toyota GR86 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 22.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• It keeps the GR86 formula focused on handling, a quick-revving engine, and driver engagement.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It adds a few performance upgrades and a limited-production Hakone Edition.

The bottom line: If you want the current-year GR86 and can live with its tight cabin and firm ride, the 2026 is the one to target. If you’re shopping mainly on price and want a similar enthusiast experience, the 2025 is worth a look for its extra special-edition appeal.
