Why it stands out

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz G-Class stands out because it keeps the model’s iconic, military-grade styling while adding meaningful mechanical and technology updates. For 2025, Mercedes-Benz gave the G-Class its first significant update since the complete redesign in 2019, and the headline change was the replacement of the G 550’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine featuring a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. That powertrain is rated at 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, and Mercedes says it improves performance while also raising combined fuel economy to an EPA-estimated 18 mpg. The cabin also gets Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system with dual 12.3-inch displays, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The G-Class also became more distinctive with the addition of a fully electric version for the 2025 model year, the G 580 with EQ Technology. It uses four individually controlled permanent-magnet electric motors, one at each wheel, for a combined 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of torque, and it can do a “G Turn” that rotates the vehicle on the spot. Its 116-kWh battery is rated for an EPA-estimated 239 miles of range, and DC fast charging from 10 to 80% takes 32 minutes. For 2026, updates are minimal, limited to two new G Manufaktur custom paint colors: Brilliant Blue Magno and Cardinal Red Magno.

Even with its luxury focus, the G-Class still appeals because it remains genuinely capable off-road and carries a style that is instantly recognizable. The tradeoff is that it starts expensive and tends to stay that way, and maintenance costs can be significant once factory warranty or certified pre-owned coverage ends.
