Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class a good car?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class earns an 7.3/10 from our experts. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.

It stands out for keeping the wagon body style alive, and it’s available as a sedan or wagon with a standard biometric fingerprint scanner to authenticate saved driver profiles. The lineup also adds the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon, which pairs plug-in hybrid efficiency with AMG-engineered performance, and the overall package is aimed at buyers who want luxury-car appeal with uncommon versatility.

The trade-offs are real: the brakes can be squealing and grabby, the back seat is cramped, and advanced safety features are not standard. Even so, the E-Class remains a distinctive choice if you want something different from the usual SUV, and 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class reliable?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is presented as a modern, tech-forward luxury car, and its powertrain setup combines a turbocharged inline-six with an electric motor and battery for plug-in hybrid operation. That setup gives you electric-only driving for short trips and gasoline power for longer drives, which supports everyday flexibility.

The expert evaluation also describes the car as impressive in real-world performance, with strong efficiency when you recharge regularly and use the hybrid system as intended. The plug-in hybrid setup is a major part of its appeal, and the car’s technology and driving character are both central to the ownership experience.

If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is that this is a complex luxury performance vehicle, so you’ll want to be especially attentive to maintenance history and how well the hybrid and high-tech systems have been cared for.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 95.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a car with this much technology and performance hardware. Focus on overall condition, how the brakes feel in normal driving, and whether the cabin electronics and driver-assistance features operate as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The E-Class lineup includes sedan and wagon variants, with the E 450 All-Terrain positioned as the less-expensive wagon and the AMG E 53 Hybrid as the performance upgrade. The base setup includes MB-Tex upholstery, a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel, and a 14.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, while higher-spec examples can add premium leather, larger wheels, and option packages that significantly change the experience.
• Powertrain: The AMG E 53 Hybrid uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, a 120-kilowatt electric motor, and a 21.2-kilowatt-hour battery. It delivers 577 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, with 604 hp available with Race Start active, plus an EPA-rated 41 miles of electric range and 22 mpg combined in hybrid mode.
• Safety package: The available Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, active intersection assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assist, active lane-keep assist, active steering assist, automatic lane change capability, evasive steering assist, congestion emergency braking, and Pre-Safe collision preparation for rear and side impacts. The standard setup includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, an exit warning system, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and a semi-autonomous self-parking system.
• Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 12.3-inch digital driver display and a 14.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, augmented reality navigation, music streaming, and a Burmester 4D surround-sound system with Dolby Atmos technology. The optional Superscreen package adds a 12.3-inch passenger touchscreen and an interior camera.
• Fuel efficiency: The AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon is rated at 22 mpg combined in hybrid mode and 41 miles of electric range. Mercedes says it can recharge from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes on a DC fast charger.

Which 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class trim should I buy?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is offered in 4 trim levels: E 350 Sedan, E 450 Sedan, E 450 All-Terrain Wagon, AMG E 53 Hybrid Sedan.

Here's the short version:

• E 350 Sedan: This is the entry point if you want the E-Class experience with the least complexity and the core luxury-tech formula. It makes sense if you want the model’s upscale cabin and modern features without paying for the more specialized wagon or AMG hardware.
• E 450 Sedan: This is the better choice if you want more performance and a more upscale feel than the base sedan, while staying in the traditional sedan body style. It should suit you if you want a balanced step up without going all the way to AMG pricing or character.
• E 450 All-Terrain Wagon: This is the wagon for buyers who want the more rugged look and light off-road travel capability mentioned in the review. It’s the practical pick if you want wagon utility and a less expensive entry into the E-Class wagon lineup.
• AMG E 53 Hybrid Sedan: This is the enthusiast choice if you want the strongest performance and the most advanced plug-in hybrid character in the lineup. It’s the best-value trim only if you care most about speed, tech, and efficiency rather than keeping costs down.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you’ll want to look for examples equipped with the Driver Assistance Package.

This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you have some room to shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.

• Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

• Clean inventory: 95.6% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class safe?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class does not have published NHTSA or IIHS crash-test ratings in the available data.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The E-Class comes standard with Pre-Safe forward-collision preparation, Pre-Safe Sound, SOS emergency call service, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, an exit warning system, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and a semi-autonomous self-parking system. The optional Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, active intersection assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assist, active lane-keep assist, active steering assist, automatic lane change capability, evasive steering assist, congestion emergency braking, and more.

The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you’ll want to verify whether a used example has the package you want.

Should I buy a 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 95.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• The 2026 model adds a standard biometric fingerprint scanner and the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon, giving you a more distinctive mix of tech and performance.

The bottom line: If you want the newest version with the wagon body style, the fingerprint scanner, and the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon’s plug-in hybrid performance, the 2026 is the one to target. If you’re more price-sensitive, a nearby model year may be worth considering, but the 2026 has the clearest blend of novelty, utility, and tech.
