How much does the 2026 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 9.27% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 927 listings available, which suggests you should have a solid range of choices.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series a good car?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series earns an 8/10 expert rating and stands out as a luxury sedan that blends comfort, technology, and performance in a way that feels especially well rounded.

The model scores 9/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.

That balance shows up in the way the car is described: it is comfortable, fun to drive, and equipped with impressive technology. The trade-offs are that its design can be polarizing and the digital voice assistant can be quirky at times, while cargo space is limited. For you, that means the 5 Series makes the most sense if you want a refined midsize luxury sedan that leans into driving enjoyment and tech rather than maximum practicality.

35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is meaningful room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series reliable?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series is presented as a familiar formula rather than a major overhaul, which can be reassuring if you prefer a model with an established setup. It is also described as quiet, comfortable, and infused with quality, and the powertrain is characterized as smooth, swift, and civilized.

The performance notes also point to a relatively fuel-efficient powertrain for its output, and the car comes with three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the car’s technology-heavy setup and available option packages can make upkeep and ownership more complex than a simpler luxury sedan.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 BMW 5 Series?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or a long list of option packages. Focus on overall condition, because the 5 Series can be loaded with technology and performance equipment that you’ll want to verify is working properly. If you’re shopping a used example, pay close attention to how the cabin electronics, driver-assistance features, and ride quality feel in real-world use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 530i and 540i are the gas models explicitly identified here, and the 540i adds the more powerful and refined turbo six engine plus standard AWD. The 530i is the simpler entry point, while the 540i is the better choice if you want the strongest blend of refinement and performance.
• Powertrain: The 540i xDrive uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, an eight-speed Sport automatic transmission, and AWD. It is described as smooth, swift, civilized, and relatively fuel efficient for its performance level.
• Safety package: The car includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance as part of an Assisted Driving system. The Driving Assistance Professional package adds lane-change support, evasive-maneuver support, an emergency stop system, and Highway Assistant with hands-free driving up to 85 mph.
• Infotainment: The BMW Curved Display combines a 12.3-inch configurable driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display. It includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, and BMW Operating System 8.5.
• Fuel efficiency: The 540i xDrive is rated at 28 mpg combined, and the test vehicle averaged 26.5 mpg on a Southern California testing loop.

Which 2026 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series is offered in 7 trim levels: 530i, 540i, 550e, i5, i5 M60, M5, and M5 Touring.

Here's the short version:

• 530i: This is the entry point if you want the 5 Series experience with the least complexity, and it uses the milder gas powertrain. It makes sense if you want the luxury, tech, and overall feel of the car without stepping up to the more powerful six-cylinder setup.
• 540i: This is the best-value choice if you want the strongest all-around mix of refinement, speed, and standard AWD. It adds the turbo six and is the version the review team clearly favors for its extra measure of sophistication and effortless speed.

The 540i also gets the more powerful and refined engine plus standard AWD, while the available Driving Assistance Professional package adds the most advanced safety and highway-driving features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 BMW 5 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 927 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.27% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 96.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $57,767, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2026 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $58,119 sits slightly below last year's $64,055.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means resale value may be softer than it was a year ago, especially if the car is priced above the current market average. If you buy well now, you may be better positioned to limit depreciation pain later.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series earns high marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, but it had not yet been tested enough at the time of publication to qualify for Top Safety Pick recognition. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had not released crash-test ratings for this model year at the time of publication.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The car includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance as part of an Assisted Driving system. If you add the Driving Assistance Professional package, you also get lane-change support, evasive-maneuver support, an emergency stop system, and Highway Assistant with hands-free driving up to 85 mph. One important caveat is that Highway Assistant was inactive in the test vehicle, and it is part of an option package rather than standard equipment.

Should I buy a 2026 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.27% compared with last year.
• The 2026 model is described as virtually unchanged and entering its third year after a 2024 redesign, so you’re getting a familiar formula rather than a major overhaul.

The bottom line: If you want the most current version of this generation and like the idea of shopping a market with decent deal availability, the 2026 is a sensible pick. If you’re more price-sensitive, a nearby model year may be worth considering, but the 2026 still looks attractive because it combines a softer price trend with strong inventory and a well-established package.

How does the 2026 BMW 5 Series compare to the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

Expert Pros & Cons (per CarGurus review team)

2026 BMW 5 Series:

• Pros: Fun to drive, Comfortable, Impressive technology.
• Cons: Potentially polarizing design, Occasional digital voice assistant quirks, Not much cargo space.

2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class:

• Pros: Plug-in hybrid’s impressive electric range, Fun to drive, Impressive technology.
• Cons: Squealing, grabby brakes, Cramped back seat, Advanced safety features are not standard.

Our experts score the 2026 BMW 5 Series 8/10 and the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 7.3/10. The BMW looks like the better all-around luxury sedan if you want comfort, technology, and a more polished ownership experience. The Mercedes-Benz has the edge if plug-in hybrid range matters to you, but its brake behavior, tighter rear seat, and missing standard safety features are meaningful drawbacks. On the numbers, the BMW is also cheaper on the used market and has more listings available.
