How much does the 2026 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 12.03% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 929 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of cars to compare.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series a good car?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series earns an 8/10 expert rating and comes across as a well-rounded luxury sedan that blends comfort, technology, and driving enjoyment. The model scores 9/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.

The overview and test-drive data point to a car that can lean toward either luxury or more spirited driving depending on how it’s equipped. The main trade-offs are its potentially polarizing design and the fact that the digital voice assistant can have occasional quirks. Cargo space is also limited, so you should weigh that against the car’s strengths if practicality matters to you.

There are 32.0% of listings priced as good or great deals, which suggests decent market flexibility if you shop carefully.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series reliable?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series is presented as a mature package, entering its third year after a redesign, which usually helps a model settle into a more refined rhythm. The performance notes describe the 540i xDrive as smooth, swift, civilized, quiet, comfortable, and infused with quality, all of which support the idea of a well-sorted ownership experience.

The cost-effectiveness notes also help here: you get three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, which can reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the car’s advanced technology and optional equipment can make upkeep more expensive once the free maintenance period ends.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 BMW 5 Series?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or a long option list. Focus on condition details that matter most in a luxury sedan: electronics, ride quality, tire wear, brake feel, and whether the cabin features work as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes the 530i, 540i, 550e, i5, i5 M60, M5, and M5 Touring. The 540i test car shows how much the upper trims can add, including M Sport, M Sport Professional, Driving Assistance Professional, Executive, and Luxury Seating packages. If you want the best balance of refinement and performance, the 540i is the one to focus on.
• Powertrain: The 540i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and it is described as smooth, swift, and civilized. The base 530i uses rear-wheel drive, while the 540i adds standard all-wheel drive.
• Safety package: The car includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance as part of an Assisted Driving system. The Driving Assistance Professional package adds steering-related lane-change support, evasive-maneuver support, and an emergency stop system. Highway Assistant is also part of that package.
• Infotainment: The BMW Curved Display includes a 12.3-inch configurable driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display. You also get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio, and BMW Operating System 8.5.
• Fuel efficiency: The 540i xDrive is rated at 28 mpg combined, and the test vehicle averaged 26.5 mpg on the review loop.

Which 2026 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series is offered in 7 trim levels: 530i, 540i, 550e, i5, i5 M60, M5, and M5 Touring.

Here's the short version:

• 530i: This is the entry point if you want the 5 Series experience with the least expensive starting point. It uses rear-wheel drive and is the trim to consider if you care more about getting into the lineup than chasing extra performance or equipment.
• 540i: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the turbo six, standard all-wheel drive, and a more refined driving character. It’s the trim that best captures the car’s balance of luxury, technology, and performance.
• 550e: Choose this if you want a plug-in hybrid version of the 5 Series. It broadens the lineup for buyers who want electrified driving without moving to the fully electric models.
• i5: This is the all-electric path in the lineup, so it suits you if you want the 5 Series shape and tech with an EV powertrain.
• i5 M60: Pick this if you want the electric model with a stronger performance focus.
• M5: This is the high-performance choice for buyers who want the most serious driving capability in the lineup.
• M5 Touring: This is the wagon-bodied performance model for shoppers who want maximum utility without giving up the M5 character.

The safety package note is that the more advanced driver-assistance features, including Highway Assistant, are tied to the Driving Assistance Professional package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 BMW 5 Series?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you have room to shop, compare, and wait for the right car.

• Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 929 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.03% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 96.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $57,833, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2026 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $58,282 sits slightly below last year's $66,250.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more affordably today. For a future seller, it means resale value may be more sensitive to mileage, condition, and equipment than it would be in a rising-price market.

If you keep the car in strong condition and avoid overpaying now, you’ll be in a better position later when it’s time to sell or trade in.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series earns high marks from the IIHS, but it had not yet completed the full battery of tests needed for Top Safety Pick recognition at the time of publication.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The car includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, which BMW groups into an Assisted Driving system. If you add the Driving Assistance Professional package, you also get steering-related lane-change support, evasive-maneuver support, an emergency stop system, and Highway Assistant. Highway Assistant provides hands-free driving at speeds up to 85 mph and is pre-paid for eight years of service.

A key caveat is that Highway Assistant was inactive in the test vehicle, and the model had not yet earned full IIHS recognition at the time of publication.

Should I buy a 2026 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

• 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.03% compared with last year.
• The 2026 model is described as virtually unchanged and entering its third year after a redesign, with the review highlighting its balance of luxury, technology, and performance.

The bottom line: If you want a mature, well-rounded 5 Series with strong tech and a softer used-car price than last year, the 2026 is the one to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can shop aggressively for a lower-mileage example near the bottom of the range and focus on the 540i for the best blend of refinement and performance.

2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class:

The BMW looks like the more balanced pick if you want comfort, driving enjoyment, and tech without the E-Class’s brake and rear-seat drawbacks.
