How much does the 2026 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 11.01% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 915 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of inventory to compare.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series a good car?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series earns an 8/10 expert rating, and the review data describes it as a luxury sedan that blends comfort, technology, and driving enjoyment in a well-rounded package.

The model scores 9/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.

It is especially appealing if you want a sedan that can lean toward luxury or more spirited driving depending on specification. The main trade-offs are its potentially polarizing design and limited cargo space, and the digital voice assistant can be quirky at times.

There are 33.6% of listings priced as good or great deals, which suggests you have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series reliable?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series is presented as a mature package, entering its third year after a 2024 redesign, which usually helps a model settle into a more established ownership experience.

The review data also points to a refined powertrain and a quiet, comfortable driving character, both of which support the sense that this is a polished midsize luxury sedan. On the ownership side, you also get three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, which can help reduce early running costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a technology-heavy luxury sedan can become more expensive to live with if you want everything working exactly as intended.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 BMW 5 Series?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.3% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or a long option list. Focus on overall condition, because the 5 Series can be equipped very differently from one listing to the next, and the right package mix matters a lot in how the car feels day to day.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes the 530i, 540i, 550e, i5, i5 M60, M5, and M5 Touring. The 540i test car shows how much the upper trims can add, including a more expressive appearance, richer cabin materials, and a more upscale overall feel, while the base 530i is the more straightforward entry point.
• Powertrain: The 530i and 540i use mild-hybrid technology, the i5 models are all-electric, and the 550e and M5 variants are plug-in hybrids. The 540i’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six is described as smooth, swift, and civilized, with strong performance and good efficiency for its output.
• Safety package: The car includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance as part of an Assisted Driving system. The Driving Assistance Professional package adds steering-related lane-change support, evasive-maneuver assistance, and an emergency stop system, while Highway Assistant is also part of that package.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch configurable driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. BMW Operating System 8.5 powers the system, and cloud connectivity adds navigation, a digital voice assistant, and connected services.
• Fuel efficiency: The 540i xDrive is rated at 28 mpg combined, and the review notes that it averaged 26.5 mpg on testing.

Which 2026 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series is offered in 7 trim levels: 530i, 540i, 550e, i5, i5 M60, M5, and M5 Touring.

Here's the short version:

• 530i: This is the entry point if you want the 5 Series experience with the least complexity, and it still gives you the core luxury-sedan formula.
• 540i: This is the best-value choice if you want the strongest blend of refinement, speed, and everyday usability. It adds the turbo six and a more polished driving character, making it the trim most buyers should start with.
• 550e: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid capability and a more electrified ownership experience.
• i5: This is the all-electric route for shoppers who want the 5 Series shape and tech with no gasoline engine.
• i5 M60: Pick this if you want the electric model with a stronger performance focus.
• M5: This is the full performance model for buyers who want the most serious driving hardware in the lineup.
• M5 Touring: Choose this if you want the M5’s performance character in wagon form.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that some of the most advanced driver-assistance features are tied to the Driving Assistance Professional option package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 BMW 5 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 915 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.01% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 96.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $57,803, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2026 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $58,250 sits slightly below last year's $65,458.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than assuming the car will hold near-new pricing.

If you keep the car in strong condition and choose a desirable configuration, you should be in a better position when it is time to sell. But the softer market also means you may not recover as much as you would have when prices were higher.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series earns high marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, but it had not yet been tested enough at the time of publication to qualify for Top Safety Pick recognition.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The car includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance as part of an Assisted Driving system. The Driving Assistance Professional package adds steering-related lane-change support, evasive-maneuver assistance, and an emergency stop system, and Highway Assistant is also part of that package.

One important caveat is that Highway Assistant was inactive in the test vehicle, and some of the most advanced safety features are not standard on every version.

Should I buy a 2026 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

• 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.3% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.01% compared with last year.
• The 2026 model is described as virtually unchanged and entering its third year after a 2024 redesign, which points to a mature, settled package.

The bottom line: if you want a well-rounded 5 Series with strong tech, comfort, and driving enjoyment, the 2026 is a sensible choice. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can focus on the lower end of the market range and look for a well-kept example with the right options.

How does the 2026 BMW 5 Series compare to the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

2026 BMW 5 Series:

2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class:

• Cons: Squealing, grabby brakes, Cramped back seat, Advanced safety features are not standard.

Our experts score the 2026 BMW 5 Series 8/10 and the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 7.3/10. The BMW looks like the more balanced pick if you want comfort, technology, and a polished driving experience in one package.
