Is the 2024 BMW i5 a good car?

The 2024 BMW i5 is a strong choice if you want a luxury EV that balances performance, comfort, and value, though its technology can be frustrating to use. It earns a 1/5 user rating and a 6.8/10 expert rating.

The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 8/10.

It is described as fun to drive, impressive on range, and comfortable inside, which fits well if you want a luxury electric sedan that feels polished on the road. The main trade-off is the unintuitive infotainment system, which is called out as underwhelming and more distracting than it should be.

The market also looks supportive, with 42.0% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2024 BMW i5 reliable?

The 2024 BMW i5 is presented as a well-rounded new EV with strong driving manners and a comfortable cabin, and BMW’s EVs are noted for often exceeding their range estimates. Its performance content also points to smooth power delivery, stable handling, and a nearly silent driving experience.

BMW’s first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps soften early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the battery and charging behavior still align with your daily needs as the car ages.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 BMW i5?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 93.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a used EV where battery condition and charging habits matter. Focus on cabin condition, infotainment usability, and whether the car has been charged mostly at home or relied on frequent DC fast charging.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin has a clean, minimal look with a large horizontal dual-screen enclosure, but many buttons and knobs have been removed in favor of touchscreen controls. The base setup can feel sparse compared with more feature-rich luxury trims, so make sure the equipment level matches what you want.
• Powertrain: The base model uses a single electric motor with rear-wheel drive, while the xDrive40 adds a second motor and all-wheel drive. The base setup makes 335 horsepower and is the best fit if you want the strongest balance of range and everyday performance.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keep assist. The optional Driving Assistance Professional package adds adaptive cruise control, a hands-free highway assistant, active lane-change assist, and lane-keep steering intervention.
• Infotainment: The iDrive system has sharp graphics and quick responses, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. It also includes a wireless charging pad, but the on-screen controls can be overwhelming and some secondary functions still require menu diving.
• Range & charging: The battery pack is 84.3 kWh, and range varies between 270 and 295 miles depending on wheel choice. BMW also offers three years of free 30-minute charges on the Electrify America Network.
• Battery health: Check the battery state-of-health, confirm how the car has been charged over time, and review remaining battery warranty coverage before you buy. A used EV that has spent most of its life on home charging is generally easier to live with than one that has leaned heavily on fast charging.

Which 2024 BMW i5 trim should I buy?

The 2024 BMW i5 is offered in 2 trim levels: eDrive40 and xDrive40.

Here's the short version:

• eDrive40: This is the best-value choice if you want the strongest range-and-price balance. It uses a single-motor rear-wheel-drive setup, delivers 335 horsepower, and is the trim that best captures the i5’s comfort, range, and everyday drivability without adding unnecessary cost.
• xDrive40: Choose this if you want more traction and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. It adds front-motor power and should suit you better if you live in a weather-prone region or simply want the extra confidence of AWD.

All i5 models come standard with frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keep assist.

What is the 2024 BMW i5's resale value?

The current average of $51,251 sits slightly below last year's $54,115.

That decline suggests the market has moved in your favor if you are buying now, but it also means future sellers may need to price more competitively to stand out. If you plan to resell later, the i5’s strong comfort, range, and luxury appeal should help, but the current trend shows you should not expect a rising-price environment. For you, that makes condition, mileage, and equipment mix especially important when choosing a used example.

Is the 2024 BMW i5 safe?

The 2024 BMW i5 has not yet been crash tested by NHTSA or IIHS, but BMW says it comes standard with frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keep assist.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The optional Driving Assistance Professional package adds adaptive cruise control, a hands-free highway assistant, active lane-change assist, and lane-keep steering intervention. A head-up display and surround-view camera system are available with the Premium package.
