Polestar, the upstart all-electric luxury performance brand formed as an offshoot of Volvo, introduces the all-new Polestar 3 for 2023. Competitors include other high-end electric vehicles (EVs) like the Tesla Model X and Model Y, the Hyundai Ioniq 6, the Kia EV6, and the Porsche Taycan, among others. ## What’s New for the 2023 Polestar 3 The Polestar 3 is all-new for the 2023 model year, marking the brand’s third model. Despite Polestar’s brief history, the Polestar 3 makes some notable departures from its two predecessors, namely that it features a central computing system with software from parent company Volvo, capable of using AI to increase the car’s safety and driver-assistance features. ## Design The Polestar 3 has a crossover profile with extra attention paid to aerodynamics. Its low, wide stance looks athletic and aggressive, with front and rear aero wings that subtly enhance the vehicle's looks as well as its efficiency. The blade-shaped LED headlights continue the theme, along with 21-inch wheels, retractable door handles, and a standard panoramic roof. ## Powertrain The 2023 Polestar 3 is available in two configurations: Long Range Dual Motor and Long Range Dual Motor with Performance Pack. Both feature an 111-kWh lithium-ion battery and all-wheel drive (AWD). The base trim’s dual-motor setup is rated for 360 kW, 489 hp, 620 lb-ft of torque, and a 300-mile range. The more-powerful model comes in at 380 kW, good for 517 hp, 671 lb-ft, and a 270-mile range. Towing capacity is up to 3,500 pounds for both trims. ## Interior The Polestar 3 seats five passengers, welcomed by the proximity-sensing retractable door handles. A standard full-length panoramic glass roof instantly gives a bright and airy feel to the space, enhanced by LED interior lighting. Cabin materials are chosen based on sustainability practices and include leather and wool certified to be animal welfare-friendly. ## Technology The Polestar 3 comes standard with a 9-inch driver information display and a 14.5-inch central display capable of over-the-air (OTA) updates. The infotainment system runs Android Auto, and apps can be added straight to the display through the Google Play store, though Apple CarPlay is also available. A 5G internet connection with three years of included data and a Bowers & Wilkins stereo also come standard. ## Safety Standard safety features include a head-up display (HUD), the Pilot Assist package of driver-assistance technology, and interior radar sensors that monitor passengers to ensure no one is left inside or overheats. The Polestar 3 will also be available with a Pilot Pack with LiDAR, which will use a network of cameras and sensors to monitor the car’s surroundings and environment, with the goal of eventually enabling autonomous driving. ## Pricing The Polestar 3 is available now. The first Polestar 3 models were produced at Volvo’s facility in China, though production will gradually shift to Volvo’s South Carolina production plant through 2024. As of this writing, Polestar lists pricing at $83,900 MSRP for the Long Range Dual Motor model and $89,900 for the Long Range Dual Motor with Performance Pack. The Pilot Pack with an advanced LiDAR system is the most significant option and costs an additional $5,000, but it won’t be available until late 2024.
