CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Jeep Compass
overall

Summary
With 7,870 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,410, 38.2% of 2023 Jeep Compass listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Jeep Compass 4.4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
87.2% of 2023 Jeep Compass listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Jeep Compass stands out because Jeep gave its small crossover a meaningful mechanical upgrade. A new turbocharged engine is standard, along with standard all-wheel drive and a more sophisticated transmission, which together address one of the model’s long-running weaknesses. It also adds additional safety features, and the overall package is backed by stylish design and impressive technology.
That said, the 2023 Compass is not an easy value proposition. The available test-drive feedback points to poor value for the money, poor visibility, and a cramped back seat, so it appeals more for its upgraded driving hardware and feature set than for outright practicality or bargain pricing. Owners also tend to praise the stylish design, upgraded interior, larger touchscreen, and advanced technology, but some remain disappointed with the powertrain’s acceleration and power.

The car seems to be a good value. It’s a perfect size. Wish it had an automatic lift gate.

Reviewed a 2023 Jeep Compass on Jul 8, 2023
The 2023 Jeep Compass is nothing short of an impressive upgrade to its predecessor, exemplifying Jeeps commitment to listen and respond to customer feedback. However, despite the undeniable improvements, it seems that Jeep has merely taken a half-step with the power upgrade, failing to live up to the level of progress weve seen elsewhere in the vehicle. First things first, lets applaud Jeeps design team. The 2023 Compass boasts an evolved aesthetic that keeps the spirit of the original, but its clearly a more refined, modern version. The bold grille, sleeker LED headlamps, and a more streamlined silhouette add an element of sophistication that previously eluded this model. Its the kind of vehicle that is as comfortable on urban streets as it is on rugged country trails. Inside, the Compass delivers a solid punch with an upgraded infotainment system, larger 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a digital drivers display that clearly takes cues from higher-end siblings in the Jeep family. The revamped interior not only appears more luxurious, but is also more intuitive, with a user-friendly layout and comfortable seating for all. Safety, one of Jeeps core principles, is also significantly improved in the 2023 Compass. With enhanced advanced driver-assist technologies such as Lane-Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning, and an improved Blind-Spot Monitoring System, the Compass confidently keeps up with modern safety standards, offering peace of mind on both city and off-road drives. Yet, the Achilles heel of the 2023 Jeep Compass lies under its hood. Jeep has indeed made updates to the powertrain with a new 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, now delivering 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. While this is an improvement over the previous model, the boost feels more like a small step rather than the giant leap this vehicle needed. The engine struggles to deliver swift acceleration, making it feel underpowered compared to competitors in its segment. On the highway, the Compass does reasonably well but could benefit from a bit more oomph during overtaking. Similarly, when the road gets rough and tumble, the Compass, despite its four-wheel-drive capabilities, leaves the driver wishing for just a bit more gusto under the pedal. In summary, the 2023 Jeep Compass is undoubtedly a commendable upgrade that showcases Jeeps commitment to its customers. With an elegant design, improved interior, and enhanced safety features, its a solid choice for anyone seeking a compact SUV. However, when it comes to the all-important power, Jeep still has some way to go. It feels like the brand stopped short of delivering the kind of powertrain that would elevate the Compass from being good to being exceptional. We cant help but feel that Jeep missed an opportunity here to make the Compass a true segment leader. Thus, were giving it a well-deserved 4 out of 5 stars, leaving room for that essential engine improvement that would complete the package.

How much does the 2023 Jeep Compass cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,401 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,637 |
| Year-Round High | $23,169 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,060 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.86% |
Prices have softened 2.86% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 7,864 listings available, which suggests healthy inventory for shoppers comparing trims and prices.
Is the 2023 Jeep Compass a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Jeep Compass earns a 4.4/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners repeatedly praise the stylish design, upgraded interior, and advanced technology, and they also like the larger touchscreen and more user-friendly cabin. The Compass also benefits from standard all-wheel drive, which fits buyers who want a compact SUV with more capability than the average commuter crossover.
The trade-offs are clear: the expert feedback calls out poor value for the money, poor visibility, and a cramped back seat. That makes this a better fit if you care more about upgraded hardware and features than maximum practicality or bargain pricing.
With 39.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Jeep Compass reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels improved, dependable, and easier to live with thanks to its upgraded interior, better technology, and added safety features. The expert driving notes also support that impression by describing the new turbocharged powertrain as quieter, smoother, and more refined, with the transmission shifting flawlessly.
Jeep also includes three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance through Jeep Wave, which helps reduce early ownership friction.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the Compass still carries value and packaging compromises, so condition and maintenance history matter more than the badge alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Jeep Compass?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the powertrain, electronics, and any signs of prior bodywork or uneven wear. Focus on cabin condition too, since the back seat and visibility are recurring weak spots in expert feedback.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes the base Sport, mid-level Latitude, upgraded Latitude Lux, upscale Limited, and Trailhawk, with Altitude, Red, and High Altitude also mentioned as special-edition versions. The base Sport misses automatic high-beam headlights, while higher trims add more convenience and luxury equipment.
- Powertrain: Every 2023 Compass uses a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 200 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive. It is smoother and more refined than the old setup, but it is still tuned more for efficiency than outright punch.
- Safety package: Standard driver assistance includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, drowsy driver detection, and a rear-seat reminder system. Available upgrades include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, and Highway Assist on Trailhawk, Limited, and High Altitude.
- Infotainment: Every model gets a 10.1-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 5, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, Bluetooth for two devices, SiriusXM satellite radio, SiriusXM Guardian connected services, Wi-Fi access, Alexa Skill support, and over-the-air updates. A 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, embedded navigation, a nine-speaker Alpine system, and Alexa Built-in are also available depending on trim and configuration.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test-drive data cites 27 mpg in combined driving, and the same source notes an observed 23.8 mpg during mixed real-world testing.
Which 2023 Jeep Compass trim should I buy?
The 2023 Jeep Compass is offered in 7 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Latitude Lux, Limited, Trailhawk, Altitude, Red, and High Altitude.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, but it still gets the new turbocharged engine, standard all-wheel drive, and the full Uconnect 5 infotainment setup. It makes sense if you want the mechanical upgrade without paying for extra luxury features.
- Latitude: This is the first step up and the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more equipment without jumping into the pricier upper trims. It is the trim to target if you want a balanced mix of features and price.
- Latitude Lux: This trim moves the Compass further toward a premium feel, building on the Latitude with more upscale content. Choose it if you want a nicer cabin and are willing to pay for it.
- Limited: This is the most polished mainstream trim, with the richer interior presentation and available Highway Assist. It suits you if comfort, tech, and a more upscale feel matter more than price.
- Trailhawk: This is the off-road-focused version, with Jeep Active Drive Low, a low range, a 20:1 crawl ratio, Rock mode, skid plates, recovery hooks, and extra ground clearance. Buy this one if you actually plan to leave pavement.
- Altitude: This special edition is based on the Latitude Lux and is aimed at shoppers who want a more distinctive look. It is best if style matters more than added capability.
- Red: This special edition is based on the Limited and adds a more appearance-driven twist. It fits buyers who want Limited content with a different visual theme.
- High Altitude: This is the most upscale special edition and is based on the Limited. It makes the most sense if you want the richest presentation and available Highway Assist.
The safety package is strongest on trims above the base Sport, since automatic high-beam headlights are standard on all but the Sport, and Highway Assist is reserved for the Trailhawk, Limited, and High Altitude.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Jeep Compass?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find decent opportunities.
- Deal availability: 39.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 7,864 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.86% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 87.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,637, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Jeep Compass's resale value?
The current average of $22,401 sits slightly below last year's $23,060.
That softer pricing suggests the Compass has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number. If you shop carefully now, you may reduce the amount of value lost over the next few years.
The model’s strong feature set and broad appeal should help keep demand steady, especially for well-equipped examples with clean history reports. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Jeep Compass safe?
The 2023 Compass earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, and NHTSA results were not published in the source material.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Jeep adds a standard drowsy driver detection system and a rear-seat reminder system for 2023, and the Compass also includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Available upgrades include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, and Highway Assist on Trailhawk, Limited, and High Altitude.
One caveat is that the base Sport misses automatic high-beam headlights, and the IIHS note indicates the current testing status is incomplete for this model year.
Should I buy a 2023 Jeep Compass or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 39.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.86% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 brings a major powertrain upgrade with standard all-wheel drive and stronger tech.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $20,702, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $22,401 average.
- It offers a more premium-feeling cabin with strong tech and upscale touches.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $20,628, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $22,401 average.
- It keeps the upgraded powertrain and adds strong value at the base price.
The bottom line: If you want the most meaningful mechanical upgrade in this generation, the 2023 is the one to target. If your priority is spending less, the 2022 and 2024 both undercut the current-year average, so a clean, well-priced example from either side of 2023 can make more sense for budget-focused buyers.
