The 2023 BMW XM earns a 7.7/10 expert rating.

It also comes across as fun to drive and impressive on the technology front, which fits its high-profile, performance-focused mission.

The trade-offs are real: the ride is harsh, the climate system is ineffective, and cargo space is limited.

Is the 2023 BMW XM reliable?

The 2023 BMW XM is presented as a high-performance plug-in hybrid with a strong emphasis on capability and technology, and its expert evaluation highlights solid driving dynamics and a well-integrated electrified powertrain.

Its performance setup combines a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with an electric motor, and the system is described as delivering strong acceleration and confident handling. The expert evaluation also notes that the XM’s powertrain can operate in electric, hybrid, and e-Control modes, with the electric motor and battery supporting short-range EV driving before the gas engine takes over.

BMW’s cost-effectiveness notes also point to a generous standard-equipment mix, which can reduce the need to add options after purchase.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a complex, high-output hybrid SUV like this can be expensive to live with if you want trouble-free, low-stress ownership.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 BMW XM?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 94.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially because this is a high-performance hybrid SUV with complex hardware. Focus on overall condition, signs of hard use, and whether the vehicle’s equipment and driving-assistance features work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The XM is positioned as a highly equipped, attention-grabbing SUV with rich materials, a distinctive cabin, and available upscale touches such as the NightGold trim, 23-inch wheels, and upgraded Merino leather. The base setup already leans heavily into luxury and performance, so you should compare condition and equipment carefully rather than assuming every example is similarly outfitted.
• Powertrain: The XM pairs a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with a 194-horsepower electric motor and a 19.2-kWh battery pack. It can run in electric, hybrid, and e-Control modes, and the expert evaluation notes strong acceleration, standard xDrive all-wheel drive, and a 4.1-second sprint to 60 mph.
• Safety package: The XM comes with BMW’s Driving Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional packages. The evaluated vehicle included Distance Control and Assisted Driving, with lane-centering support and automated lane-change help; Assisted Driving Plus did not appear to be present.
• Infotainment: The XM uses the BMW Curved Display with iDrive 8, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and connected services. The system is intuitive, and the configurable displays are a major part of the cabin experience.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert evaluation recorded 18.1 mpg when driving without a charged battery, and the battery provided about 40 to 42 miles of electric range on a full charge in testing.

Which 2023 BMW XM trim should I buy?

The 2023 BMW XM is offered in 2 trim levels: XM and XM Label.

Here's the short version:

• XM: This is the one most buyers should start with. It already delivers the core XM experience: the electrified V8 powertrain, standard xDrive all-wheel drive, strong performance, and the high-end cabin and technology that define the model. It’s the best-value choice if you want the full personality of the XM without chasing the ultra-exclusive variants.
• XM Label: This is the more exclusive, higher-output direction, with enhanced performance and design details that set it apart from the standard model. Choose it if you want the most extreme version of the XM and are willing to pay for rarity and extra punch.

The safety package centers on BMW’s Driving Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional systems, and the evaluated vehicle appeared to include Distance Control and Assisted Driving.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 BMW XM?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 162 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.19% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 94.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $75,519, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 BMW XM's resale value?

The current average of $75,519 sits slightly below last year's $90,108.

That drop suggests the XM has moved into a softer pricing environment, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle is equipped.

Because the current average is already below the prior-year level, a clean, well-kept example should be easier to position than one with visible wear or missing equipment. If you buy carefully now, you’ll be better placed to protect value later.

Is the 2023 BMW XM safe?

The 2023 BMW XM earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes with BMW’s Driving Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional packages of advanced driver-assistance systems. The evaluated vehicle included Distance Control, which is adaptive cruise control, and Assisted Driving, which adds lane-centering assist. Automated lane changes are also part of the system, and the lane-keeping assist is described as aggressive but generally effective.

The system performed best on straight freeway sections and handled multi-lane expressways reasonably well, though it struggled in more complex construction and lane-shift situations. The evaluation also suggests Assisted Driving Plus may not have been present on the tested vehicle.

Should I buy a 2023 BMW XM or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 94.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.19% compared with last year.
• The 2023 stands out as an exclusive new plug-in hybrid SUV with a clear performance focus, dramatic styling, and strong technology appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the XM’s most distinctive early-market personality and you’re shopping for value, the 2023 is the one to target. If you’re mainly price-sensitive, keep comparing listings carefully and focus on condition, equipment, and deal quality rather than chasing the newest badge alone.
