Is the 2022 Volvo XC40 a good car?

The 2022 Volvo XC40 stands out by blending compact-SUV practicality with a more upscale feel than its size suggests. It offers a high-end, minimalist cabin, quality materials, thoughtful details, impressive rear seat room, and a large cargo area with a useful folding floor divider.

For 2022, it also brings standard driver-assistance features, a 9-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, and standard leather upholstery and steering wheel trim even on the base model. Is the 2022 Volvo XC40 reliable?

The 2022 Volvo XC40 has some reliability concerns as part of the ownership picture, even though it also brings a strong safety focus and a well-rounded equipment list. That means you should treat it as a vehicle worth evaluating carefully rather than assuming trouble-free ownership.

For used buyers, the long-term risk is that repair costs and ownership headaches may be more likely than on a simpler mainstream SUV, so condition and maintenance history matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volvo XC40?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 87% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should prioritize a history report first, then focus on a thorough inspection of the cabin electronics, touch-based controls, and overall interior condition. Pay close attention to rear visibility concerns and make sure the vehicle’s features work as intended during a test drive.

Should I buy a 2022 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 87% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.10% compared with last year.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $22,070, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $23,142 average.
• It adds an electric version with updated software and driver-assist tech.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $28,454, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $23,142 average.
• It brings mild-hybrid powertrains and revised styling.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the best all-around choice if you want a premium small SUV with strong equipment and a softer price than the 2023. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2021 is the better value play, while the 2023 makes sense only if you want the newer updates and are willing to pay more.
