Used 2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI for Sale near California

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI a good car?

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI earns a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

It fits your needs if you want a practical sedan that still makes driving feel engaging. The overview and expert testing both point to the same core appeal: you get everyday usefulness, including plenty of cargo space, without giving up the fun-to-drive character that defines the GLI.

The trade-offs are clear. All-wheel drive is not available, and the car is described as poor value for money. Even so, if you care more about driver involvement and usable space than maximum practicality per dollar, the GLI still makes a strong case for itself.

35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI reliable?

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI is presented as a well-rounded performance sedan, but the expert material also makes clear that it is tuned more for driving enjoyment than for low-stress ownership. Its powertrain is described as excellent, with effortlessly swift acceleration and smooth, quiet operation, and the car’s dynamic hardware is built to deliver predictable, confidence-inspiring behavior.

That said, the same expert coverage also points to a sporty setup with firm ride quality and road noise that is more noticeable at highway speeds. The cost-effectiveness discussion also frames the GLI as a car in a competitive segment where value and ownership costs matter.

If you buy used, long-term ownership risk is best approached as moderate rather than carefree, so a careful inspection and maintenance history review matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper history review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the drivetrain, suspension, brakes, and any signs of hard use. You should also pay close attention to interior condition and infotainment operation, since this car’s appeal depends heavily on its equipment and driving feel.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The standard GLI now includes the formerly optional Autobahn Package, which means you should expect a more complete equipment set than a stripped performance trim. The cabin gets perforated leather upholstery, and the model’s updated styling and red-accent details give it a more distinctive look. The trade-off is that some features are deleted to keep the GLI more affordable, so make sure the car you’re considering has the equipment you want.
• Powertrain: The GLI uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and you can get it with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. It is front-wheel drive, but Volkswagen adds a torque-sensing limited-slip differential, XDS, progressive steering, performance brakes, and adaptive damping to help put the power down and sharpen handling.
• Safety package: Volkswagen’s IQ Drive collection is standard, and it includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. Some IQ Drive functions are unavailable with the manual transmission, and Emergency Assist is only available with the dual-clutch automatic.
• Infotainment: The GLI gets an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, SiriusXM 360L, wireless charging, and a nine-speaker Beats Audio system. It also includes Car-Net connected services, but it does not get the embedded navigation system found in the Jetta SEL.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert testing loop returned 29.9 mpg, just shy of the official 30 mpg combined estimate.

Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• It adds a more distinctive look, standard Autobahn Package equipment, and a strong mix of practicality and driving enjoyment.

Consider the 2021 if:

• It offers a sporty personality, a manual transmission, and strong handling in a practical sedan body.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the better pick if you want the more complete and better-equipped GLI, especially if you value the updated styling and standard Autobahn Package content. If you are mainly shopping on price, the 2021 can still make sense because it delivers the GLI formula with a similar enthusiast focus and may be the more affordable route into the model.
