Is the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport a good car?

Yes — with a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.2/10 expert rating, the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport lands as a strong choice for shoppers who value style and everyday comfort. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Form and function.

User feedback repeatedly points to the roomy interior, smooth ride, and impressive features, especially in higher trims. The cabin’s spaciousness and distinctive design also come through as recurring strengths, while the overall experience feels polished enough for daily use.

The trade-offs are clear: the interior materials can feel cheap, and road noise can be a concern. That matters most if you want a midsize SUV that feels upscale in every detail rather than just in appearance.

If you want a two-row SUV with a distinctive look and a comfortable cabin, this one fits that brief well. The market also shows 36.0% good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the model’s smooth ride, roomy interior, and features they can count on over time. The overall tone of the reviews suggests a vehicle that feels solid for everyday use and longer trips alike.

Volkswagen’s Carefree Coverage plan with complimentary scheduled maintenance also helps reduce early ownership friction. That said, used buyers should still watch for signs of wear in the cabin and make sure the vehicle has been maintained consistently, since long-term satisfaction depends on condition as much as reputation.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any listing you’re considering, even if it looks clean on paper. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important if you’re shopping higher-mileage examples or vehicles with larger wheels and more equipment. Focus on cabin condition, road noise, and signs of hard use, since those are the areas most likely to affect your day-to-day satisfaction.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base SE trim has 18-inch alloy wheels that look too small for the Cross Sport’s shape, while SE with Technology gets more appropriate 20-inch wheels. SEL trim adds a more upscale appearance, and SEL Premium R-Line brings the most distinctive look with 21-inch machined-finish wheels.
• Powertrain: The standard turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque and requires premium fuel. The available 3.6-liter V6 makes 276 hp and 266 lb-ft, does not require premium gas, and is the better choice if you want stronger towing and a more satisfying drive.
• Safety package: Every version includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic post-collision braking. All but the base SE add adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, and low-speed automatic braking. SEL trim adds automatic high-beam LED headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and IQ Drive.
• Infotainment: The base SE gets an 8-inch digital instrument display and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and two USB-C ports. Other versions upgrade to a 10.25-inch digital display and an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, SiriusXM with 360L, and more USB ports.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 returned 19.2 mpg on the test loop, and the turbo-four is described as 2-3 mpg better than the V6 in combined driving.

Which 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, SE with Technology, SEL, SEL R-Line Black, and SEL Premium R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the entry point, but it’s also the most basic version in appearance and equipment. You get the core safety tech and the simpler infotainment setup, so it makes sense if you want the lowest starting point and plan to keep expectations modest.
• SE with Technology: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the more appropriate 20-inch wheels and a more advanced infotainment setup without jumping all the way to the luxury-leaning upper trims.
• SEL: This trim is the better pick if you want a more complete safety and convenience package. It adds lane-keeping and lane-centering tech, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, and IQ Drive.
• SEL R-Line Black: Choose this if you want the sportier visual treatment and blacked-out styling, but it’s more about appearance than a major equipment leap.
• SEL Premium R-Line: This is the most upscale version, with the strongest visual presence, the 21-inch wheels, and the premium-feeling equipment mix that suits buyers who want the most distinctive Atlas Cross Sport.

The safety package expands as you move up the trim ladder, with the biggest feature gains arriving on SEL and above.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to compare listings and wait for the right one.

• Deal availability: 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,705 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.62% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 85.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $24,086, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport's resale value?

The current average of $24,086 sits slightly below last year's $26,946.

That price movement suggests the model has softened enough to create a more approachable used-buying window, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively. If you buy well now and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you’ll be better positioned when it’s time to resell.

The current market also shows a fairly wide spread between the low and high end of the year-round range, which gives you some flexibility depending on trim and condition. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport safe?

The Atlas Cross Sport gets decent crash-test ratings, though it does not earn the highest accolades from IIHS or NHTSA.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Every version includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic post-collision braking. All but the base SE add adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, and low-speed automatic braking. SEL trim adds automatic high-beam LED headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and IQ Drive, which bundles Travel Assist and Emergency Assist.

Travel Assist can be a little obvious in its steering and braking inputs, and Lane Assist can misread road construction scars as lane markings. Those are the main caveats to keep in mind if you want the most polished driver-assistance experience.

Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.62% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Volkswagen added standard digital instrumentation and made 4Motion standard for most trim levels.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,662, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $24,086 average.
• It offers a two-row layout with standard advanced safety features and easy-to-use technology.

The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2022 if you want the better current-market balance of price, inventory, and updated equipment. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the smarter value play, especially if you find one in strong condition with the features you want.
