How much does the 2022 Subaru Forester cost?

Prices have softened 8.22% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 4,051 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Subaru Forester earns a 4.62/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, safety features, spacious interior, AWD capabilities, and useful technology. The expert review also points to its roomy cabin and practical, easy-to-live-with character, which fits buyers who want a compact SUV that prioritizes utility over flash. The main trade-offs are its potentially polarizing styling and fairly pedestrian performance, so it makes the most sense if you value capability, safety, and space more than excitement. With 38.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester reliable?

Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback also emphasizes that the Forester feels dependable, trouble-free, and well suited to long-term use, with many drivers trusting it as an all-around SUV. The expert review reinforces that impression by describing it as durable and a strong fit for daily living. Subaru’s practical, easy-to-drive setup adds to the sense that this is a vehicle built for steady ownership rather than drama. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright fragility and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not abused.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any candidate and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a Wilderness model or any vehicle that may have seen rough roads. Focus on overall condition, signs of off-road use, and whether the equipment on the car matches the trim you’re shopping. A clean history is a good start, but you’ll want to confirm that the SUV’s practical strengths haven’t been offset by hard use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring. The base model starts with standard all-wheel drive, but the higher trims add more convenience and capability, and the Wilderness stands out with extra clearance, more body cladding, and an interior designed to get dirty.
• Powertrain: The Forester uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a CVT and all-wheel drive. It makes 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, and the Wilderness version uses a CVT setup Subaru says improves initial torque supply.
• Safety package: EyeSight 4.0 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking are also part of the safety story, while Touring adds DriverFocus.
• Infotainment: Base trims get a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, and Starlink connected services. Wilderness, Limited, and Touring use an 8-inch screen, and that setup adds navigation and a Harman Kardon premium sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The Wilderness is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 25.9 mpg.

Which 2022 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2022 Subaru Forester is offered in 6 trim levels: base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the entry point if you want the Forester’s core strengths at the lowest price. You still get standard all-wheel drive, the 6.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the standard EyeSight safety suite, so it covers the essentials well.
• Premium: This is the trim that adds meaningful everyday convenience, including access to a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. If you want a better-equipped Forester without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the best-value choice.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a more expressive version of the Forester without going all the way to the Wilderness or luxury-oriented trims. It sits in the middle of the lineup and gives you a more feature-rich step up from the lower trims.
• Wilderness: This is the trim for you if you want the most off-road-ready Forester. It adds extra ground clearance, all-terrain tires, a skid plate, a full-size spare, a 180-degree forward-view camera, and a dirt-friendly interior.
• Limited: This trim is the better pick if you want the larger 8-inch screen plus navigation and the Harman Kardon audio system without moving all the way to Touring.
• Touring: This is the most upscale Forester, and it adds DriverFocus with drowsiness and distraction monitoring. It’s the trim to consider if you want the most comfort and the most advanced convenience features.

Touring also gets DriverFocus, while the standard EyeSight suite remains the core safety package across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.

• Deal availability: 38.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 4,051 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.22% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 86.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $24,385, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $24,385 sits slightly below last year's $26,568.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled enough to give you a better entry point than a year ago. For a future seller, that can mean less upside than before, but it also means you may be buying after some of the depreciation has already been absorbed. The Forester’s practical reputation and broad appeal should help support demand when it’s time to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2022 Subaru Forester earns five-star ratings from NHTSA overall, with four-star rollover resistance and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Subaru’s EyeSight 4.0 safety system is standard, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. The Forester also offers blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, and a rear-seat reminder system. Touring adds DriverFocus, which monitors for drowsiness and distraction. The main caveat is that the review noted a warning-light issue during one restart, and the Wilderness may require separate re-testing because of its modified height.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 38.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.22% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Subaru added fresh design details, upgraded EyeSight tech, and the new Wilderness trim.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,954, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $24,385 average.
• It is mostly unchanged and emphasizes value, safety, and standard AWD.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $26,950, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $24,385 average.
• It adds next-generation EyeSight and an improved standard infotainment system.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the best all-around pick if you want the updated safety tech and the added appeal of the Wilderness trim. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the smarter value play, while the 2023 makes sense if you want the newer refinements and are willing to pay more.
