Is the 2022 Nissan Altima a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Nissan Altima earns a 4.83/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its performance, fuel economy, and spacious interior, and they also like the updated technology plus convenience features such as remote start and heated seats. On the other hand, some shoppers wish for more luxury touches, including a power driver's seat and more radio options.

Is the 2022 Nissan Altima reliable?

The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Altima is well put together, with a quiet cabin and a smooth, composed ride that supports everyday dependability.

The ownership picture is helped by the fact that the car’s tech and comfort features are well received, and the model’s broad appeal suggests it has staying power with used buyers. For long-term ownership, the main risk is that the base engine and some lower-trim materials may leave you wanting more if you plan to keep it for years.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Nissan Altima?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any car you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important if you’re shopping lower-mileage examples or a trim with more equipment, since condition can vary a lot from one Altima to another. Focus on how the cabin, electronics, and drivetrain feel in real use, not just on the feature list.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S trim is the most basic version, while higher trims add a more premium look and feel, better materials, and more equipment. Lower trims don’t look and feel as nice, so the value sweet spot is usually a trim that gives you the nicer interior without pushing too far up the price ladder.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, or a 2.0-liter VC-Turbo with 248 hp and 273 lb-ft. The base engine is available with FWD or AWD on most trims, while the VC-Turbo is limited to the SR with FWD.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, automatic high beams, driver-attention warning, Rear View Monitor, rear door alert, and hill-start assist. Starting with the SV trim, Nissan Safety Shield 360 adds rear automatic braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and a rear sonar system. The base S can get an optional Driver Assist package with similar added coverage.
• Infotainment: The S uses a 7-inch touchscreen, while other trims get an 8-inch touchscreen plus an advanced drive-assist display. Wireless smartphone integration is not listed; wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included on higher trims, and starting with SL you also get navigation, connected services, and a Bose audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel economy ranges from 32 mpg with the 2.5-liter engine and FWD to 29 mpg with the VC-Turbo.

Which 2022 Nissan Altima trim should I buy?

The 2022 Nissan Altima is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SV, SR, SL, and Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable with the most basic interior and tech setup. It gives you the core Altima experience, but it’s the trim most likely to feel stripped down compared with the others.
• SV: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more of the safety and convenience equipment that makes the Altima easier to live with every day. If you want a balanced mix of features without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the trim to target.
• SR: Choose this if you want the sportier look and the extra personality that comes with the Midnight Edition package on the 2.5-liter engine. It’s the trim that best suits buyers who care about style and a more distinctive appearance.
• SL: This is the comfort-and-tech upgrade, with the Bose audio system, navigation, connected services, and remote engine start with intelligent climate control. It suits you if you want a more upscale daily driver.
• Platinum: This is the top trim, and it’s the one to consider if you want the most complete Altima with standard AWD and the richest feature set.

Beginning with the SV trim, Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard, so that’s the key safety-package step up to keep in mind as you move beyond the base model.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Nissan Altima?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 4,211 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.57% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 77.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,459, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Nissan Altima's resale value?

The current average of $17,459 sits slightly below last year's $19,744.

That decline suggests the Altima has softened in the used market, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favorable if you’re planning to sell soon. A lower current average can make it easier to attract shoppers, but it also means you may not recover as much as you would have when prices were higher.

For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the car in strong condition so you’re not competing from a weak starting point. Well-equipped trims and clean history examples should hold up better than rougher, higher-mileage listings.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Nissan Altima safe?

The 2022 Nissan Altima earns five-star ratings from NHTSA in overall crash protection, front crash protection, side crash protection, and rollover resistance. It also earns the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, automatic high beams, driver-attention warning, Rear View Monitor, rear door alert, and hill-start assist. Starting with the SV trim, Nissan Safety Shield 360 adds rear automatic braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and a rear sonar system. The base S trim can add an optional Driver Assist package with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, and a rear sonar system.

The main caveat is that the Altima’s headlights earn only an Acceptable IIHS rating, even though the car scores very well overall. That means the Altima is strong on crash protection and driver aids, but you should still pay attention to lighting performance if you do a lot of night driving.

Should I buy a 2022 Nissan Altima or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.57% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines broad trim and powertrain choice with standard advanced safety features.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $16,216, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $17,459 average.
• It offers broad appeal with all-wheel drive and modern tech.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $20,683, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $17,459 average.
• It emphasizes comfort, efficiency, and straightforward family-sedan usability.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and feature content, the 2022 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the better value play, while the 2023 makes sense only if you’re willing to pay more for a newer-year example.
