Is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the comfortable and luxurious interior, impressive handling, and strong performance, especially with the turbo engine. The available Bose audio system also comes up as a highlight, and the car’s style helps it stand out in the compact-car class.

The main trade-offs are poor fuel economy and a cramped back seat, and the technology can feel unintuitive. That makes this a better fit if you care more about design, driving enjoyment, and upscale touches than maximum practicality.

With its mix of style, driving enjoyment, and strong safety ratings, it suits you best if you want a compact car that feels more premium than mainstream rivals. Good and great deals account for 34.0% of listings, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mazda MAZDA3?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-trim or turbo model. Focus on overall condition, interior wear, and whether the technology and driver-assistance features work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes sedan and hatchback body styles, with the 2.0 sedan, 2.5 S, and 2.5 Turbo model series. The 2.5 S lineup offers the most variety, while the 2.5 S Premium hatchback is the only version with a six-speed manual transmission. Base versions are more affordable, but they also miss some of the richer equipment and flexibility found higher up the range.
• Powertrain: The 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.5-liter four-cylinder produces 186 hp and 186 lb-ft. The 2.5 Turbo uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine with 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on 87-octane fuel, or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on 93-octane fuel. Fuel economy ranges from 31 mpg combined for the 2.0 sedan to 26 mpg or 27 mpg combined for the turbo models, depending on body style.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the 2.5 S Select trim or higher. Turbo models add adaptive front headlights, while the top 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus adds Traffic Jam Assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses an 8.8-inch static infotainment display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and Mazda Connected Services is complimentary for three years. The system also includes remote engine start, a car finder function, and automatic emergency notification after a collision.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0 sedan returns 31 mpg combined. The 2.5 S range lands between 27 mpg and 30 mpg combined, depending on trim and powertrain. Turbo models return 26 mpg combined in the hatchback and 27 mpg combined in the sedan.

Which 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 5 trim levels: 2.0 sedan, 2.5 S, 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Premium, and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.

Here's the short version:

• 2.0 sedan: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the Mazda3 lineup. It gives you the core Mazda3 experience, but it is the least powerful choice and is best suited to shoppers who care most about value and efficiency.
• 2.5 S: This is the best-value trim for most buyers because it adds the stronger 2.5-liter engine and sits in the heart of the lineup. If you want the broadest mix of everyday usability, driving enjoyment, and price, this is the trim to start with.
• 2.5 S Select: This is the smart step up if you want more confidence and convenience, since blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert becomes standard here. It makes sense if safety tech matters to you and you want more equipment without jumping too far in price.
• 2.5 S Premium: This is the trim to choose if you want the manual-transmission hatchback, since it is the only version that offers a six-speed manual. It is the enthusiast pick in the non-turbo range.
• 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus: This is the top choice if you want the strongest performance and the most advanced equipment, including Traffic Jam Assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system. It is the right pick if you want the most complete Mazda3 experience and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package starts with a strong standard set, and blind-spot monitoring arrives at the 2.5 S Select trim or higher.

Should I buy a 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.48% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds a Carbon Edition and new turbo-model equipment while keeping the Mazda3’s upscale feel and strong safety reputation.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $19,274, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $20,564 average.
• It emphasizes refined driving enjoyment and a more mature, upscale character.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $22,137, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $20,564 average.
• It leans harder into a luxury-like feel and hatchback practicality.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and overall appeal, the 2022 is the primary year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2021 can save you money, while the 2023 makes sense if you want to spend more for a slightly more polished feel.
