Buyers may look at the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Lexus GX, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, or the Porsche Cayenne as alternatives. The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is available with four powertrain choices, including 355-horsepower and 395-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engines with mild-hybrid support and two supercharged V8s producing 518 and 575 horsepower. All models get an eight-speed automatic transmission. The mild-hybrid system functions as a starter motor and helps boost power. It also allows the engine to shut off while coasting at times to preserve fuel economy. Though it’s considered a more youthful, lively Range Rover, the Sport offers almost as much interior space as the stately, full-fat Range Rover SUV does. It’s available with a third-row seat that can happily accommodate children, and Land Rover offers upgrades such as heated second-row seats. Elsewhere, the interior finishes range from luxurious to opulent, and Land Rover offers cabin color schemes that range from mild to wild. Cargo space measures 28 cubic feet with the rear seats upright and 59 cubic feet with the second row folded flat. The Range Rover Sport’s infotainment system brings two 10.0-inch touchscreens running the newest Pivi Pro interface. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the new system runs flawlessly on large, wide displays. Most vehicle functions and settings are housed in the touch system, so there are few physical controls in front of the driver. A 12.3-inch configurable digital gauge cluster is standard and can be set up to display maps and other information. Land Rover offers several advanced driver aids, including forward collision warnings, lane-departure warnings, and automatic emergency braking. Some features require added-cost options, including blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. The Range Rover Sport hasn’t received crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), nor has it been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That’s not an indictment of the SUV’s overall safety. Some automakers, especially somewhat lower-volume manufacturers of expensive luxury vehicles, don’t have all vehicles crash-tested each year due to the cost.
