Epitomizing “cute ute,” the Jeep Renegade is the smallest crossover SUV in the Jeep family. All-new in 2014, the subcompact crossover utility vehicle (CUV) was refreshed in 2019. Since then, the Renegade received an occasional dose of new features every couple of years. Model-year 2022 is no different. An 8.4-inch touchscreen display is now standard across the lineup. Also, the high-level Renegade Limited is updated with new exterior bits, while a new Altitude package adds more than a few inside-and-out accents of its own.

The 2022 Jeep Renegade is equipped with a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine that is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. This carryover powertrain produces 177 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 32 mpg combined for front-wheel-drive (FWD) models and up to 29 mpg combined for the four-wheel-drive (4WD). For increased fuel efficiency, the Renegade features active grille shutters (except on Trailhawk models) and an engine start-stop system.

The Renegade lineup consists of four main models: Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk. All but the entry-level Sport feature a 4WD configuration with a 2,000-pound towing capacity. In terms of price point, the Altitude and special-edition (RED) accessory packages fit in between the Latitude and Limited trim levels. And although it is a small utility vehicle, the Renegade is no less a Jeep, thanks to its innate 4x4 capability.

Its 4WD systems include Jeep Selec-Terrain, which offers Auto, Snow, Sand, and Mud drive modes. An additional Rock mode is exclusive to the Trailhawk model. Speaking of the Renegade Trailhawk, the vehicle delivers best-in-class off-road skills thanks to a 21:1 crawl ratio, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, protective skid plates, front and rear tow hooks, hill descent control, up to 8.1 inches of wheel articulation, and up to 19 inches of water fording capability. Small but mighty, indeed. But the all-road fun isn’t just for the Trailhawk. All 4WD Renegade models feature a segment-exclusive disconnecting rear axle and a power transfer unit for improved fuel economy.

As much as off-roading is a Jeep thing, so is having an extensive list of color choices. The 2022 Renegade does see some changes to its exterior and interior schemes. Dropped for the model year are exterior paints Glacier Metallic, Granite Crystal, Jetset Blue, and Omaha Orange. All-new is Graphite Gray, while carryovers include Alpine White, Bikini (Blue), Black, Coronado Red, Slate Blue, and Sting Grey. For the interior, the Polar Plunge combos have been replaced with a Black-plus-Ski-Gray option in cloth or leather.

The new Altitude package includes a slew of design treatments such as Gloss Black applied to the grille, badging, rear valence, turn bezels, outside mirrors, 18-inch wheels, and interior details. The cabin also features a black headliner and cloth or leather upholstery with Ski Grey accent stitching.

The 2022 Renegade enjoys an infotainment upgrade to the 8.4-inch Uconnect 4C touchscreen display for Sport and Latitude models. This means all Renegades are now equipped with the latest tech—including navigation. The latest Uconnect system features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, HD Radio, Bluetooth, voice activation, streaming audio, and SiriusXM.

The 2022 Jeep Renegade starts at $24,695 for the base Sport model and at $31,340 for the top-tier Trailhawk. The destination fee is another $1,595. The 2022 Renegade is available now.
