Automakers of all types are committing to going electric. Even small boutique brands have extensive plans for electrification. Bentley is one of them, and while the automaker is backed by the Volkswagen industrial complex, it’s not the most likely candidate for a full shift to EVs. Still, Bentley says it will hybridize its catalog by 2025 and notes that it will go on to become an EV-only company by the end of the decade. The Bentayga, a hulking luxury SUV, is one of its first to get the hybrid treatment. The 2022 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid goes on sale soon, and it will carry a starting price of around $190,000.

Styling updates for the Bentayga include a new, more upright grille with updated chrome trim. The SUV’s headlights are further apart than before, and they feature a new elliptical LED matrix design. They’re also around an inch higher than they were on the previous model. Bentley says the headlights feature its new “cut crystal” design, giving them a sparking look when not lit.

The Bentayga Hybrid comes with either four- or five-passenger seating. The five-passenger model gets a new rear seat frame that improves its reclining angle, and the four-seat variant offers two spacious buckets in back split by a center console. The SUV has more knee room for back-seat passengers as well.

The Bentayga Hybrid isn’t expressly called a plug-in hybrid, though that’s what it is. The vehicle offers up to 31 miles of all-electric range, and a total of 536 miles combined. The powertrain includes a turbocharged 3.0-liter engine paired with an electric motor. The system produces a combined 443 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, which reaches the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Though slower to 60 mph than its gas-powered counterpart, the Bentayga Hybrid still delivers strong acceleration of 5.2 seconds. The SUV’s top speed is 158 mph.

Though the Bentayga Hybrid is quick, Bentley omitted some of the go-fast bits it gives other variants. The Hybrid is missing the active anti-roll system and third-row seat option found in the standard Bentayga. The Hybrid is also not available with a tow hitch or the All-Terrain package. That said, the Bentayga Hybrid’s batteries do help even out the weight distribution to a near-perfect 50.4/49.6 balance.

The Bentley Bentayga Hybrid comes with a 10.9-inch infotainment display that brings wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto. Navigation is standard, and Bentley says the system offers app and internet search functionality. The SUV also gets wireless charging as standard and USB-C ports throughout. There’s a SIM card to support the Bentayga’s onboard connectivity, and it allows the use of many connected features without the need for a smartphone.
