How much does the 2021 Volvo XC40 cost?

Prices have softened 7.73% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC40 a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Volvo XC40 earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

The XC40 stands out because it combines distinctive styling with a premium-feeling cabin, and the 2021 update adds an all-electric Recharge model with Android-based software and over-the-air updates. That makes it especially appealing if you want a small luxury SUV that feels modern and thoughtfully designed.

The trade-offs are worth noting: cargo space is not a strong point, and the Recharge model is expensive. Even so, the lineup’s multiple powertrain choices give you flexibility depending on whether you want a conventional gasoline model or the electric version.

38.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC40 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The XC40 is described as a polished small luxury SUV with strong safety equipment and a premium interior, and the 2021 model adds an electric variant with updated software and a scalable sensor suite. Its gasoline versions carry over largely unchanged, which can be reassuring if you want a more established setup.

The performance notes also point to a traditional luxury character that emphasizes quiet and comfort rather than aggressive driving. For the Recharge, Volvo’s battery safety cage and redesigned front crash structure are intended to support durability and crash performance.

Volvo includes a four-year, 50,000-mile basic warranty and powertrain warranty, plus an eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty for the Recharge. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle’s condition and maintenance history match its premium positioning.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volvo XC40?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any candidate and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings at similar prices. Focus on overall condition, because the XC40’s premium feel depends heavily on how well the interior and exterior have been maintained.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The gasoline XC40 models are available in Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription, while the Recharge is a single-trim electric model with standard AWD. The cabin is described as high-quality and minimalist, and the Recharge adds model-specific styling details that set it apart from the gasoline versions.
• Powertrain: The gasoline lineup includes a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder with FWD or AWD, while the Recharge uses dual electric motors for AWD and a combined 402 hp and 486 lb-ft. The electric model also supports one-pedal driving and has a towing capacity of 2,000 pounds when properly equipped.
• Safety package: The XC40 comes with lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, rear parking sensors, hill-start assist, and hill-descent control. Optional features include traffic-sign recognition, reverse automatic emergency braking, a driver-alertness monitor, run-off road mitigation, oncoming lane mitigation, and Pilot Assist.
• Infotainment: The Recharge gets a 9-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Android Automotive OS, Google Assistant, Google Maps, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free calling, and OTA update capability.
• Fuel efficiency: The gasoline T4 is rated at 26 mpg combined, with 23 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. The T5 AWD is rated at 25 mpg combined, with 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. The Recharge is rated at 79 MPGe combined with a 208-mile range.

Which 2021 Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volvo XC40 is offered in 4 trim levels: Momentum, R-Design, Inscription, Recharge.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the entry point for the gasoline XC40 lineup, so it makes the most sense if you want the XC40’s style and safety without paying for extra luxury touches. It’s the trim to start with if value matters most.
• R-Design: Choose this if you want a sportier appearance and a more expressive take on the XC40’s already distinctive design. It suits you if style matters as much as equipment.
• Inscription: This is the trim to consider if you want the most upscale feel from the gasoline lineup, with the XC40’s premium interior presentation front and center. It’s the best fit if comfort and cabin ambiance are your priorities.
• Recharge: This is the electric model, and it stands apart with standard AWD, Android Automotive OS, OTA updates, and model-specific styling. It’s the right choice if you want the most advanced tech and the zero-emission powertrain.

The XC40 comes with a long list of standard safety features, and the Recharge adds Volvo’s latest sensor suite.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volvo XC40?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 38.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 492 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.73% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 78.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,849, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volvo XC40's resale value?

The current average of $21,849 sits slightly below last year's $23,680.

That price movement suggests the XC40 has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number today. If you purchase near the current average or below, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell.

The model’s broad appeal comes from its styling, premium cabin, and multiple powertrain choices, all of which help keep it relevant in the used market. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC40 safe?

The 2021 Volvo XC40 received the highest “Top Safety Pick+” rating from IIHS. It also earned five-star ratings from NHTSA overall, with five-star ratings in frontal-crash and side-crash tests, and four-star ratings in rollover crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The XC40 comes with lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, rear parking sensors, hill-start assist, and hill-descent control. Optional safety tech includes traffic-sign recognition, reverse automatic emergency braking, a driver-alertness monitor, run-off road mitigation, oncoming lane mitigation, and Pilot Assist.

One caveat is that the crash-test ratings cited here apply to the gasoline XC40, not the Recharge, because the electric model’s structure differs. If you’re shopping the Recharge, pay close attention to the specific vehicle’s safety equipment and condition.

Should I buy a 2021 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 38.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.73% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 model year adds the all-electric Recharge, along with Android-based software and over-the-air updates.

The bottom line: If you want the XC40’s distinctive styling and premium feel with a useful mix of gasoline and electric choices, the 2021 model is a strong place to start. If you’re especially price-sensitive, compare it with nearby years to see whether a lower-mileage example or a better-equipped trim gives you more value for the money.
