What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Kia Soul?

At 70.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s equipment matches the trim being advertised. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example is often worth paying a little more for.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin is intuitive and comfortable, with a standard 7-inch touchscreen and an available 10.3-inch touchscreen. Higher trims add upscale standard features such as keyless entry, automatic climate controls, remote start, and a sunroof, while the base model stays simpler.
• Powertrain: The base engine is a 2.0-liter inline-four with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed manual or an available CVT. A turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 201 hp and 195 lb-ft is also offered, paired with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is not offered.
• Safety package: The Soul earned a 2021 Top Safety Pick award from IIHS. Standard and available driver-assistance features include forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, lane change assist, driver attention monitoring, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert/rear collision avoidance assist, adaptive cruise control, and a head-up display. Most of these features are held back in added-cost options, and the base LX can be paired with a Technology Package that adds a long list of advanced safety features.
• Infotainment: The base model gets a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 10.25-inch touchscreen is available, along with HD radio and voice recognition. Kia also offers a Harman Kardon audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The base 2.0-liter engine with the manual transmission is rated at 26/31/27 mpg city/highway/combined, while the CVT version is rated at 28/33/30 mpg. The turbocharged engine returns 27/32/29 mpg.

Which 2021 Kia Soul trim should I buy?

The 2021 Kia Soul is offered in 6 trim levels: LX, S, X-Line, GT-Line, EX, Turbo.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Soul’s core value and usability with the standard 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the model’s easy-to-use layout. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the lineup and plan to add the available Technology Package for more safety equipment.
• S: This trim is the better everyday pick if you want more equipment without jumping too far up the price ladder. It keeps the Soul’s practical character while moving you closer to the sweet spot for shoppers who want a stronger mix of features and value.
• X-Line: This trim adds a more distinctive look and, for 2021, gets new suspension tuning. It suits you if you want a more styled version of the Soul without moving all the way to the top of the range.
• GT-Line: This trim also gets new suspension tuning for 2021 and leans into a sportier presentation. It’s the right choice if you want the Soul’s personality with a more expressive appearance and a bit more edge.
• EX: This is the comfort-oriented choice, with upscale standard features such as keyless entry, automatic climate controls, remote start, and a sunroof. It’s a strong fit if you want the most polished daily-driver experience without going all the way to the Turbo.
• Turbo: This is the performance-oriented trim, pairing the turbocharged 1.6-liter engine with the seven-speed dual clutch transmission and the most power in the lineup. Choose it if you want the strongest acceleration and don’t mind paying for it.

The LX Technology Package is the key safety-package note to keep in mind if you’re shopping lower trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Kia Soul?

This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.

• Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,748 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.24% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 70.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,631, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Kia Soul's resale value?

The current average of $13,766 sits slightly below last year's $14,376.

That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, a well-kept example with desirable equipment and a clean history should be easier to move than a rougher one. The current price trend suggests the model is holding value reasonably, but not aggressively.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Kia Soul safe?

The 2021 Kia Soul earns a 2021 Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and earns four-star ratings for front crash safety and rollover resistance, and five-star ratings for side crash safety from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Soul’s safety equipment includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, lane change assist, driver attention monitoring, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert/rear collision avoidance assist, adaptive cruise control, and a head-up display. Most of those features are held back in added-cost options, so trim choice matters if you want the fullest safety suite.

One caveat is that headlight performance varies by trim level, with a Good or Poor result depending on equipment.

Should I buy a 2021 Kia Soul or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 70.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.24% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 update adds a standard rear occupant alert and new suspension configurations for the X-Line and GT-Line trims.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $12,697, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $13,766 average.
• It blends small-SUV utility with compact-car efficiency.

The bottom line: If you want the newer model-year updates and a still-reasonable used price, the 2021 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2020 is the more budget-friendly path.
