CarGurus Analysis: 2021 GMC Terrain
Summary
With 206 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,866, 39.8% of 2021 GMC Terrain listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 GMC Terrain 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2021 GMC Terrain stands out as a compact SUV that leans more premium and polished than many rivals. It shares its basic hardware with the Chevrolet Equinox, but GMC gives the Terrain a more angular look and a more upscale feel inside. For this generation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and many models feature an eight-inch touchscreen. The Terrain also benefits from a push-button gear selector, better sound insulation, and a slightly smarter interior, which help it feel a bit more refined than its mainstream positioning might suggest.
For 2021, the Terrain’s lineup was simplified around a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, since the larger 2.0-liter engine option was dropped. That engine makes 170 horsepower and works with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Buyers who want a used Terrain for everyday driving may appreciate its comfortable ride, roomy cabin, and good safety equipment, while the model’s value proposition is strengthened by its generally good reliability scores and lower prices than some Japanese rivals. At the same time, cargo space is not a strong point, and the 1.5-liter engine is not the best choice for buyers who want stronger acceleration or maximum towing ability.

Very nice interior. Excellent options. We went with a black on black model but would have purchased this one if the other had not been available.

I absolutely adore my Terrain! I love everything about it. Not too big, not too small. Zero complaints. If I did have to make a suggestion I would say blind spot protection, and maybe a bigger screen that shows your speed but not deal breakers and simply just suggestions :)

I love the Terrain! It drives great and has a smoothest ride. It also is good on gas.

How much does the 2021 GMC Terrain cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,132 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,132 |
| Year-Round High | $20,164 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,155 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.04% |
Prices have softened 10.04% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,427 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and conditions.
Is the 2021 GMC Terrain a good car?
Yes — the 2021 GMC Terrain earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Drivers consistently praise its stylish interior, feature set, smooth ride, and fuel efficiency. The overview also supports that appeal for everyday use, especially if you want a comfortable ride, a roomy cabin, and a more polished feel than many compact SUV rivals.
The market also looks reasonably shopper-friendly, with 36.1% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2021 GMC Terrain reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with owners emphasizing its smooth ride and overall value. The combination of strong satisfaction and praise for efficiency and comfort suggests this is a model many buyers feel confident living with over time.
For used buyers, that kind of owner confidence can reduce long-term ownership risk, especially if you verify maintenance history and condition carefully.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 GMC Terrain?
At 74.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can catch hidden body, suspension, or repair issues. Focus closely on overall condition, since accident history can matter more than mileage alone when you’re comparing similar listings.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 GMC Terrain?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find value.
- Deal availability: 36.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,427 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.04% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,132, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 GMC Terrain's resale value?
The current average of $18,132 sits slightly below last year's $20,155.
That price decline suggests the Terrain has become more affordable in the used market, which can help you buy at a lower entry point today. For a future seller, though, softer pricing means resale gains may be limited unless your vehicle stands out for condition, mileage, and maintenance history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2021 GMC Terrain or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 36.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.04% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $21,581, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $18,132 average.
- It adds an AT4 trim with standard all-wheel drive and a more rugged appearance.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2021 is the stronger starting point because it costs less and still has strong owner approval. If you’re willing to pay more for the 2022’s added rugged styling and standard AWD on the AT4, that newer year may be worth a look; otherwise, the 2021 is the smarter pick for price-sensitive buyers.
