CarGurus Analysis: 2021 GMC Canyon
overall

Summary
With 83 currently listed for sale near Memphis, TN and an average price of $34,592.00, 36.1% of 2021 GMC Canyons for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 GMC Canyon 4.25 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
74.7% of 2021 Canyon models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 GMC Canyon stands out as a refreshed midsize pickup that borrows some of the big-truck look many buyers want without moving up to a full-size model. It gets a freshened face and a new AT4 off-road-inspired trim, but the truck is otherwise largely the same as before. That makes it appealing to shoppers who want a capable, enjoyable pickup with a more lifestyle-oriented feel, especially since midsize trucks often sit in an awkward value position compared with larger alternatives.
Even so, the 2021 GMC Canyon still shows its age in a few important ways. Its interior materials feel cheap, and the back seat is cramped, which can limit everyday comfort for passengers. The base engine is also described as underwhelming. On the positive side, it offers impressive towing and payload ratings, multiple powertrain options, and multiple body styles, giving buyers a useful mix of capability and configuration choices.

First off, I Love my truck, however with that being said, I wish the back up camera had the overhead view. I also don’t understand having to have the radio/computer updated at a cost to the consumer. Otherwise, again, I love my truck.

How much does the 2021 GMC Canyon cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,466 |
| Year-Round Low | $27,939.45 |
| Year-Round High | $30,474.35 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $30,424 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.43% |
Prices have softened 6.43% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,166 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $27,939.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 GMC Canyon a good car?
Generally — the 2021 GMC Canyon earns a 4.25/5 user rating, and our experts give it 7.33/10 overall.
The model scores 8/10 across Form and function, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its value, appearance, and numerous features, and they also like the spacious interior and luxury-like features for the price. The Canyon’s appeal is strongest if you want a midsize pickup with a more premium, lifestyle-oriented feel rather than a stripped-down work truck.
The trade-offs are clear: the ride can feel stiff and loud on the highway, and the diesel engine can lack power in some situations. That lines up with the overview’s point that the Canyon offers capability and useful configuration choices, but still feels like an older truck in some everyday comfort areas.
With 27.5% of listings priced as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 GMC Canyon reliable?
Owners rate it 4.25/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a truck that owners feel good about living with over time, especially because they value its features and overall usefulness. The owner summary also leans toward dependable day-to-day ownership, with praise centered on value and the sense that the truck delivers what buyers expect from it.
The expert review also describes the Canyon as capable and enjoyable, which supports the idea that it can be a truck you count on for regular use. On the cost side, the diesel’s efficiency can help if you rack up miles, and the model’s fuel-economy spread gives you flexibility depending on how you plan to use it.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that age-related comfort and refinement issues may matter more as mileage climbs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 GMC Canyon?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status does not replace a proper inspection. Pay close attention to cabin wear, rear-seat space if you plan to carry passengers, and whether the truck’s condition matches the trim and equipment level advertised. If you’re considering a higher-mileage example, make sure the powertrain and suspension feel consistent on a test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Elevation Standard keeps things simple with manually adjustable front seats, power locks, two USB ports, and a standard 7-inch touchscreen, while the Elevation adds LED fog lights, remote start, a six-way power driver’s seat, automatic climate control, and aluminum interior accents. The AT4 brings a more rugged setup with off-road suspension, skid plates, all-terrain tires, and red tow hooks, while the Denali adds the most premium equipment, including polished exterior details, LED bed lighting, a spray-on bed-liner, heated-and-cooled front seats, and a wireless charging pad.
- Powertrain: You get a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque, an optional 3.6-liter V6 with 308 hp and 275 lb-ft, and an available 2.8-liter Duramax diesel with 181 hp and 369 lb-ft. The gas four-cylinder is the least convincing choice, while the V6 and diesel better match the truck’s capability.
- Safety package: The available Driver Alert package adds forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert. It is standard on the Denali and optional on other trim levels, so lower trims may need extra shopping if you want those features.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 8-inch screen is optional on the Elevation and AT4 and standard on the Denali, which also adds navigation, HD radio, and wireless charging.
- Fuel efficiency: The diesel returns 20 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 23 combined in rear-wheel-drive form, or 19/28/22 with four-wheel drive. The base four-cylinder returns 19/25/22 with rear-wheel drive and 19/24/21 with 4WD, while the V6 returns 18/25/21 with rear-wheel drive and 17/24/19 with 4WD.
Which 2021 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?
The 2021 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.
Here's the short version:
- Elevation Standard: This is the value entry point if you want the Canyon’s basic capability and big-truck styling without paying for extras. It gives you the essentials, including the 7-inch touchscreen, but it also makes the truck’s lower-rung simplicity obvious.
- Elevation: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like remote start, automatic climate control, a power driver’s seat, and LED fog lights without jumping all the way to the premium end.
- AT4: Choose this if you want the most adventurous setup. It adds off-road suspension, skid plates, all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, and standard V6 power, making it the right fit if you want a more trail-ready Canyon.
- Denali: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with the richest feature set, including the larger infotainment screen, Bose audio, heated-and-cooled front seats, wireless charging, and the standard Driver Alert package. It suits you best if comfort and convenience matter more than price.
The Driver Alert package is standard on the Denali and optional on the other trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 GMC Canyon?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,166 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.43% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 78.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $27,939.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 GMC Canyon's resale value?
The current average of $28,466 sits slightly below last year's $30,424.
That price movement suggests the Canyon has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at the right price and keep the truck in clean condition, you may have a better shot at limiting your loss later. The strongest resale prospects will usually come from well-equipped, well-kept examples that match what used buyers want most.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.25/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 GMC Canyon safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include a rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring system, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and the Teen Driver system. The available Driver Alert package adds forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert, and it is standard on the Denali but optional on other trim levels. The Denali also gets an upgraded HD backup camera and Hitch Guidance.
The main caveat is that the advanced driver-assistance features are not standard across the lineup, so you need to shop carefully if those matter to you. Teen Driver is a useful built-in feature if you plan to hand the truck down to a newer driver.
Should I buy a 2021 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.43% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.25/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 refresh adds a new face and the AT4 trim, giving the truck a more modern, off-road-leaning personality.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $30,712, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $28,466 average.
- It adds a Denali Black Edition package and renames the High Elevation package as Elevation Premium.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2021 is the smarter starting point because prices have eased and inventory is healthy enough to shop selectively. If you’re willing to pay more for a slightly updated feature mix, the 2022 is the cleaner alternative, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2021 and target well-kept examples near the low end of the market.
