Overview

The 2021 Ford Explorer Hybrid brings a fuel-efficient powertrain to the versatile and accommodating Explorer platform. The Explorer Hybrid was introduced for the 2020 model year—the same year the current generation of conventionally-powered Explorer made its debut. Like other Explorer models, the hybrid carries into 2021 with only minor changes.
The Explorer boasts three rows, with seating for up to six, as the second row features individual captain’s chairs. With the third-row seats in place, 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space is available. With the third row folded, there’s up to 47.9 cubic feet. When all seats are folded, the Explorer Hybrid offers 87.8 cubic feet of cargo space. A hands-free power liftgate comes as standard equipment.
The hybrid equation starts with a 3.3-liter V6 and adds an electric motor, putting out a combined 318 horsepower and 322 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels or available four-wheel drive (4WD) through a 10-speed automatic transmission. With rear-wheel drive (RWD), this setup returns fuel economy of 27 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. When equipped with 4WD, the Explorer Hybrid returns 23 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined.
The Explorer Hybrid is offered exclusively in the upscale Limited trim level. Standard features include remote keyless entry, remote start, three-zone climate control, leather upholstery, heated-and-ventilated front seats, and wireless device charging. It also comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen that runs the intuitive SYNC 3 infotainment system, with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Ford also provides the Co-Pilot360 suite of driver-assistance features as standard equipment. This includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. The Explorer Hybrid also comes standard with blind-spot monitoring, front-and-rear parking sensors, traffic-sign recognition, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
The 2021 Ford Explorer Hybrid starts at $49,855 in its lone Limited trim. It’s backed by a three-year/36,000-mile powertrain warranty. Hybrid components are backed by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty.

How much does the 2021 Ford Explorer Hybrid cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,656 |
| Year-Round Low | $23,558.79 |
| Year-Round High | $27,795.99 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,804 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −14.92% |
Prices have softened 14.92% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 198 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $23,558.79, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Ford Explorer Hybrid a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction for this model year.
That kind of feedback suggests you may be looking at a vehicle that meets expectations for everyday use, especially if you prioritize a proven ownership experience.
22.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Ford Explorer Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
For used buyers, that usually means you should focus less on broad reputation and more on how well a specific vehicle has been maintained, because condition and service history will matter most over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Ford Explorer Hybrid?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still review the report carefully, since even a clean listing can hide incomplete records or prior damage that affects value. Put a pre-purchase inspection at the top of your checklist, and pay close attention to wear, maintenance evidence, and overall condition.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Ford Explorer Hybrid?
This looks like a moderate market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay selective.
- Deal availability: 22.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 198 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.92% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 78.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,558.79, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Ford Explorer Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $23,656 sits slightly below last year's $27,804.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, your best protection is buying well, keeping mileage reasonable, and maintaining the vehicle carefully.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2021 Ford Explorer Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 22.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.92% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
If you want the strongest balance of current pricing, inventory depth, and owner satisfaction, the 2021 is the primary year to focus on. If you're especially price-sensitive, you can use the softer market to compare against nearby years and target the best-conditioned example rather than chasing the newest listing.
