Why it stands out
The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer stands out as a small crossover SUV that brings stylish design and plenty of technology at an affordable price. It is positioned as a new entry point for younger and more cost-conscious buyers, and it comes in L, LS, LT, Activ, and RS trim levels, with the latter three available with an optional all-wheel-drive system.
On the road, the Trailblazer’s strengths include great handling and easy-to-use technology, which help give it a more appealing personality than many basic small SUVs. It also has a sporty look that many shoppers will find attractive. At the same time, it is not without compromises: the base engine is underwhelming, the seats are uncomfortable, and cargo space is limited.

Lots of features. With the trailblazer. I was comparing it to the blazer but this was too big. Great value The only thing in my view would be the heated steering wheel.

After looking into a Blazer very hard, I decided to look at the TrailBlazer as a step down. I’m glad I did. This my not be a Blazer but still very similar features and is very nice vehicle. For the value we paid for the TrailBlazer, it’s still very well equipped vehicle. The only down side is the motor, peppy but not a 6 cylinder.

I love my little trailblazer but it’s only been a few days so I hopeful that it’s going to be a really good suv for me. I love the sporty look and it’s so roomy inside.

Owners repeatedly praise its sporty design, good gas economy, and spacious interior with great standard features. The Trailblazer also gets credit for easy-to-use technology and a personality that feels more appealing than many basic small SUVs.
The trade-offs are clear: the base engine is underwhelming, the seats are uncomfortable, and cargo space is limited. In practical terms, this is a better fit if you want an affordable, stylish small crossover with strong tech rather than a roomiest-in-class family hauler.
Good and great deals account for 33.1% of listings, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle that many owners find dependable in everyday use, with praise centered on its good gas economy, spacious cabin, and strong standard features. The same feedback also suggests some buyers have had trouble-free ownership experiences, even if a few reports mention water leakage issues in some units.
The expert review also describes the Trailblazer as a decent-to-drive crossover with enough power for most situations and a powertrain that is agreeable in use. Chevrolet includes your first maintenance visit free of charge, which helps lower early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure you avoid a neglected or poorly maintained example, especially one with signs of water intrusion.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, because accident-free listings are common but not universal. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with signs of interior wear, electrical quirks, or water damage. Focus on overall condition, because the Trailblazer’s value depends heavily on finding one that has been cared for properly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base setup is the least flashy, while Activ adds a more rugged appearance with skid plate trim, unique 17-inch wheels, sport terrain tires, a larger grille, and standard two-tone paint. The interior is well laid out, but hard shiny plastic is more noticeable as the price climbs.
- Powertrain: Front-wheel-drive L, LS, and LT models use a turbocharged 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine with 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT. Other versions use a turbocharged 1.3-liter 3-cylinder with 155 hp and 174 lb-ft, and AWD swaps in a 9-speed automatic.
- Safety package: Chevy Safety Assist is standard and includes forward-collision alert with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a safe following distance indicator. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assistance, a high-definition reversing camera, and adaptive cruise control are available depending on trim.
- Infotainment: The standard system has a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth pairing for two phones, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, Teen Driver, Chevrolet Connected Access, and a WiFi hotspot. The upgraded system adds an 8-inch display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM 360L, and cloud-connected personalization.
- Fuel efficiency: The testing loop returned 26.6 mpg for the Activ AWD, and the official combined rating is 28 mpg.
Which 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer trim should I buy?
The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LS, LT, Activ, and RS.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Trailblazer’s core value proposition at the lowest price. It makes the most sense if you want the cheapest path into the model and can live with the simpler standard setup.
- LS: This is the next step up if you want a little more flexibility without moving too far up the price ladder. It’s the trim to consider if you want a better balance of value and equipment than the base model.
- LT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and keeps the Trailblazer’s strong tech and everyday usability without pushing into the pricier appearance-focused versions.
- Activ: This is the choice if you want the more rugged look and the added equipment that comes with it, including the skid plate trim, unique wheels, and sport terrain tires. It suits you best if style and a more adventurous vibe matter more than maximum value.
- RS: This is the sportier-looking option in the lineup, and it makes sense if you want the most expressive appearance and the upgraded tech content that can be paired with the higher trims.
Chevrolet Safety Assist is standard, while blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-change assistance, the high-definition reversing camera, and adaptive cruise control depend on trim level.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,620 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.98% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 78.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,184, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer's resale value?
The current average of $17,184 sits slightly below last year's $18,673.
That softer pricing suggests the Trailblazer has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number. If you purchase near the lower end of the range and keep the vehicle in good condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later.
The market also appears to reward the Trailblazer’s strong tech and broad appeal, which can help support demand when it’s time to sell. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer safe?
The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Chevrolet Safety Assist is standard, and it includes forward-collision alert with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a safe following distance indicator. You also get 10 airbags, a rear-seat reminder system, Teen Driver technology, and subscription-based automatic collision notification service.
Depending on trim level, you can add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assistance, a high-definition reversing camera, and adaptive cruise control. The expert review also notes some inconsistency from the lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist system, so those features are worth testing carefully on your own drive.
Should I buy a 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.98% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It launches the Trailblazer as a stylish, tech-forward, affordable entry-point SUV with strong handling and easy-to-use technology.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $18,968, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,184 average.
- It adds a heated steering wheel and new paint colors.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2021 is the stronger starting point because pricing has softened and inventory is still healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for a few extra convenience updates, the 2022 is the cleaner choice; otherwise, the 2021 gives you the core Trailblazer experience at a lower cost.
