Summary
With 509 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,642, 41.3% of 2020 Volvo XC40 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Volvo XC40 4.6 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Volvo XC40 stands out by blending compact-SUV practicality with the kind of distinctive design and upscale feel that helped Volvo reassert itself in the luxury market. It was introduced for the 2019 model year, and its appeal comes from being both stylish and useful rather than merely fashionable. The cabin is a major part of that identity: the XC40’s minimalist interior feels more expensive than its price suggests, with quality materials, leather upholstery, and thoughtful details throughout. It also offers impressive rear seat room for its footprint and a large cargo area with a useful folding floor divider, which makes it especially appealing to buyers who want a premium small SUV that still works well day to day.
For 2020, the XC40’s strengths also include a strong standard equipment list and a safety-first approach. Every XC40 comes with Volvo’s Intellisafe suite of driver-assistance features, and the model includes a 9-inch touchscreen with Volvo’s Sensus operating system, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Standard features also include an eight-speaker audio system, while available upgrades add more luxury and convenience. The XC40’s powertrain lineup at launch gave buyers a choice between a front-wheel-drive T4 with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque and an all-wheel-drive T5 with 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, both using a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. That combination helps the XC40 feel well-rounded, with enough performance for everyday use and the premium character to match.
There are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. The XC40’s rear visibility is poor, and its touch-based interior controls can be fiddly. Some reliability concerns also remain, and owners have noted that the back seats could be more comfortable and offer better reclining options. Even so, the 2020 Volvo XC40 remains distinctive because it delivers a premium, safety-focused, and thoughtfully designed small SUV experience that feels different from the usual luxury compact crossover formula.

Amazing safety ratings! The Volvo XC40 was awarded 5 out of 5 ratings on all IIHS crash tests is the only small SUV to achieve a “Good” rating in every individual test category (as of December 2022), based on the test showing minimal risk of injuries for all passengers. Volvo quality, safety and reliability. No other similar vehicle on the market can beat that.

Drives like butter. Fun features, too. Definitely my favorite car Ive ever owned. Comfortable driving experience but the back seats are not ideal. They dont recline at all and sit at most a 90 degree angle. Perfect 2nd car or for someone without kids.

Is the 2020 Volvo XC40 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Volvo XC40 earns a 4.6/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its reliability, safety, and comfort, and many also like the fun driving experience and unique features. That fits well with its compact-SUV practicality and premium, day-to-day usability, especially if you want something stylish that still works as a useful small SUV. With 41.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a solid chance to find a competitive offer.
Is the 2020 Volvo XC40 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe the XC40 as reliable, and the review summary also highlights its dependable feel, safety, and comfort. That said, some buyers note concerns around rear-seat comfort and visibility, so long-term ownership risk is more about livability tradeoffs than a lack of appeal. For used buyers, that means you should focus on condition, maintenance history, and whether the cabin layout still suits your needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Volvo XC40?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should prioritize a history report first, then inspect the vehicle closely for signs of prior damage or inconsistent repairs. Pay extra attention to rear visibility, interior controls, and back-seat comfort, since those are the areas owners most often mention. A careful test drive should also confirm that the cabin, cargo area, and everyday usability still match the premium feel you expect.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volvo XC40?
Yes — this looks like a buyer-friendly market for the 2020 Volvo XC40.
- Deal availability: 41.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 510 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.98% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 78.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,586, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Volvo XC40's resale value?
The current average of $20,638 sits slightly below last year's $22,926.
That price movement suggests the XC40 has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A softer market can also make it easier for you to find a well-priced example now, but it means resale gains are unlikely to be driven by appreciation. Instead, your best protection is buying a clean, well-kept vehicle and avoiding overpaying upfront.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 41.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.98% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $18,651, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $20,638 average.
- It offers upscale style and clever cargo solutions.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,195, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,638 average.
- It adds an all-electric Recharge model with updated tech.
The bottom line: The 2020 is the best all-around pick if you want the strongest mix of price, satisfaction, and market availability. If you want to spend less, the 2019 is the better value-oriented path, while the 2021 makes more sense if you specifically want the newer electric option and are willing to pay more.
