CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Prius Prime
overall

Summary
With 265 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,155, 38.5% of 2020 Toyota Prius Prime listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
71.3% of 2020 Toyota Prius Prime listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Prius Prime stands out as a plug-in hybrid built around efficiency above all else. The test-drive summary calls it the most efficient plug-in hybrid on sale, and that focus on saving fuel is reinforced by its strong value proposition and the long-running hybrid expertise behind it. For buyers who want to minimize gas stops, that combination makes it especially appealing.
Its strengths are straightforward: it is fuel-efficient and offers excellent value for money. At the same time, the tradeoffs are just as clear. The 2020 Toyota Prius Prime is described as sluggish in performance and outdated in technology, and owner feedback echoes that some drivers find the infotainment system difficult to use. Limited cargo space is another drawback noted by reviewers, so while it is compelling for efficiency-minded shoppers, it is not the most well-rounded choice for every need.

Surprising... both good and bad. Starting off this car has a ton of features like a heads up display, JBL sound, and a giant touch screen. On the surface all this is pretty cool, but in practice the infotainment system is really awkward and difficult to use. It makes poor use of the space. Generally this Prius has less storage space than our Previous generation of Prius. The good surprises came from unexpected places. The speed and acceleration were much improved. It feels quick and it has a much more quiet ride. They did a good job on insulation . Overall it feels like a good car but quirky.

| Year-Round Low | $20,511 |
| Year-Round High | $23,362 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,367 |

There are 259 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime a good car?
Generally — the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime earns a 4/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise its fuel economy, hybrid technology, and useful features like adaptive cruise control. The overview also points to strong value and a clear efficiency-first mission, which fits you well if minimizing gas stops matters most.
The trade-offs are just as clear: the expert review calls out sluggish performance and outdated technology, and owners mention the infotainment system can be difficult to use. Limited cargo space also keeps it from feeling like the most versatile choice.
With its efficiency-focused packaging and plug-in-hybrid setup, it makes the most sense if you care more about saving fuel than about driving excitement or a cutting-edge cabin. Even so, 38.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to efficient performance, impressive hybrid technology, and a car that many drivers feel good about living with over time.
The expert review reinforces that dependability angle by describing Toyota’s hybrid powertrain as proven and near-perfect, with long-running hybrid expertise behind the car. It also notes ToyotaCare, which includes 2 years/25,000 miles of maintenance and 2 years/unlimited miles of roadside assistance.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about whether the car has been maintained and used in a way that preserves its efficiency and overall condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Prius Prime?
At 69.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body condition, repair quality, and signs of prior damage. Because this model’s appeal is tied so closely to efficiency and daily usability, you should also pay close attention to how well the cabin, infotainment, and charging-related features work in real life.

- Trim level: The base LE misses the larger 11.6-inch touchscreen, while the XLE adds the bigger display along with navigation, wireless charging, heated front seats, and keyless entry. The Limited adds blind-spot monitoring and other higher-end equipment, so the XLE is the best-value trim if you want the strongest feature mix without going all the way upmarket.
- Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid setup is built around efficiency, with 25 miles of all-electric driving, 133 MPGe in electric mode, and 55 mpg city, 53 highway, and 54 combined once the battery is depleted.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring is included only on the Limited.
- Infotainment: The touchscreen measures 11.6 inches on the XLE and Limited, but it is unavailable on the base LE. Wireless charging is included on the XLE.
- Fuel efficiency: The Prius Prime is rated at 55 mpg city, 53 highway, and 54 combined after electric range is used up, and it delivers 133 MPGe in electric mode.
Which 2020 Toyota Prius Prime trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Prius Prime is offered in 3 trim levels: LE, XLE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, but it skips the larger touchscreen and the extra convenience features that make the car easier to live with every day.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim because it adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, navigation, wireless charging, heated front seats, and keyless entry.
- Limited: This is the most fully equipped version, and it adds blind-spot monitoring on top of the higher-end comfort and tech features.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but blind-spot monitoring is reserved for the Limited.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Prius Prime?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you should shop carefully and be ready to move when you find a strong listing.
- Deal availability: 38.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 259 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.53% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 69.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,511, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime's resale value?
The current average of $23,156 sits slightly above last year's $22,367.
That upward move suggests the market still sees value in this model year, especially for shoppers who prioritize efficiency and low running costs. If demand stays steady, sellers should continue to benefit from the Prius Prime's reputation as a fuel-saver with broad appeal.
For you as a future seller, the strongest resale story comes from the car's efficiency-first identity and its established hybrid reputation. Listings that are clean, well-kept, and priced competitively should remain easier to move than less efficient alternatives.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime safe?
The Prius Prime itself was not crash-tested by either NHTSA or IIHS, but the otherwise identical Prius earned five-star ratings overall from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS. In NHTSA testing, it received four-star ratings for both driver and passenger in a head-on frontal crash, and two-star ratings in the pole test.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, and Toyota Safety Connect with automatic 911 calling after a crash. Blind-spot monitoring is included only on the Limited.
The main caveat is that the Prius’s crash-test results include weaker sub-scores in frontal and pole testing, so you should weigh that against the car’s otherwise strong safety equipment list.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Prius Prime or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 38.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.53% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 stands out for its efficiency-first packaging and proven hybrid expertise.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $23,051, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $23,156 average.
- It adds a stronger standard equipment package with better efficiency-focused practicality.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2020 if you want the established efficiency story and are shopping the current market for the best deal. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2021 is worth a look because it undercuts the 2020 slightly while keeping the same core appeal.
