CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Prius Prime
overall

Summary
With 264 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,003, 37.5% of 2020 Toyota Prius Prime listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
72.0% of 2020 Toyota Prius Prime listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Prius Prime stands out as a plug-in hybrid built around efficiency above all else. The test-drive summary calls it the most efficient plug-in hybrid on sale, and that focus on saving fuel is reinforced by its strong value proposition and the long-running hybrid expertise behind it. For buyers who want to minimize gas stops, that combination makes it especially appealing.
Its strengths are straightforward: it is fuel-efficient and offers excellent value for money. At the same time, the tradeoffs are just as clear. The 2020 Toyota Prius Prime is described as sluggish in performance and outdated in technology, and owner feedback echoes that some drivers find the infotainment system difficult to use. Limited cargo space is another drawback noted by reviewers, so while it is compelling for efficiency-minded shoppers, it is not the most well-rounded choice for every need.

Surprising... both good and bad. Starting off this car has a ton of features like a heads up display, JBL sound, and a giant touch screen. On the surface all this is pretty cool, but in practice the infotainment system is really awkward and difficult to use. It makes poor use of the space. Generally this Prius has less storage space than our Previous generation of Prius. The good surprises came from unexpected places. The speed and acceleration were much improved. It feels quick and it has a much more quiet ride. They did a good job on insulation . Overall it feels like a good car but quirky.

How much does the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,976 |
| Year-Round Low | $20,499 |
| Year-Round High | $23,364 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,212 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +3.44% |
Prices are up 3.44% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 269 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime a good car?
Generally — the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime earns a 4/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise its fuel economy, efficient performance, and useful features like adaptive cruise control. The overview also points to strong value and Toyota’s long-running hybrid expertise as major reasons it appeals to efficiency-minded shoppers.
The trade-offs are clear: the expert review calls out sluggish acceleration and outdated technology, and owner feedback echoes that the infotainment system can be difficult to use. It fits you best if you want to minimize gas stops and prioritize efficiency over driving excitement or a more modern cabin.
36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to efficient performance, impressive hybrid technology, and a car that many drivers feel good about living with over time.
The expert review reinforces that dependability angle by emphasizing Toyota’s proven hybrid powertrain and its ability to handle long journeys, commutes, and short trips with ease. The cost-effectiveness notes also mention ToyotaCare, which includes 2 years/25,000 miles of maintenance and 2 years/unlimited miles of roadside assistance.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about whether the car’s dated tech and cabin usability will still suit your needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Prius Prime?
At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and any signs of prior repair. Because the model’s appeal is tied so heavily to efficiency and value, condition matters a lot: a clean, well-kept example is easier to justify than one with questionable history or visible wear.

- Trim level: The base LE misses the larger 11.6-inch touchscreen, while the XLE and Limited get it standard. The XLE is the best-value choice because it adds the larger screen, navigation, wireless charging, heated front seats, and keyless entry.
- Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid setup is built around efficiency, with 25 miles of estimated all-electric driving and 133 MPGe in electric mode. Once the battery is depleted, it still returns strong fuel economy and remains focused on saving gas rather than quick acceleration.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring is included only on the Limited.
- Infotainment: The touchscreen measures 11.6 inches on the XLE and Limited, but it is not available on the LE. Wireless charging is part of the XLE’s value story, and the system also supports Apple CarPlay.
- Fuel efficiency: The Prius Prime is rated at 55 mpg city, 53 mpg highway, and 54 mpg combined after the battery range is depleted, and it delivers 133 MPGe in electric mode.
Which 2020 Toyota Prius Prime trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Prius Prime is offered in 3 trim levels: LE, XLE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, but it leaves out the larger 11.6-inch touchscreen that makes the cabin feel more up to date. Choose it only if you want the lowest starting price and can live with the simpler setup.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim. It adds the larger touchscreen, navigation, wireless charging, heated front seats, and keyless entry, making it the smartest pick for most shoppers.
- Limited: This is the most fully equipped version, and it adds blind-spot monitoring on top of the XLE’s equipment. Buy it if you want the most safety and convenience features in the lineup.
Blind-spot monitoring is included only on the Limited.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Prius Prime?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 269 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.44% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 71.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,499, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime's resale value?
The current average of $22,976 sits slightly above last year's $22,212.
That upward move suggests the market still values this model year’s efficiency and reputation. If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, you should have a decent chance of holding onto value better than a less efficient or less desirable alternative.
The price trend also shows that demand has remained steady enough to support current pricing. For a future seller, that means a clean example with strong history and good equipment should remain easier to move than one with visible wear or a questionable record.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime safe?
The 2020 Toyota Prius Prime itself was not crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, but the closely related Prius earned five-star ratings overall from NHTSA and a 2019 Top Safety Pick from IIHS. In NHTSA testing, it received four-star ratings for both driver and passenger in a head-on frontal crash, and two-star ratings for the pole test.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams. Toyota Safety Connect also comes standard for three years and can automatically dial 911 in a crash. Blind-spot monitoring is limited to the Limited trim.
The main caveat is that the related Prius showed weaker results in some crash tests, including the IIHS small front overlap test on the passenger side and the NHTSA pole test.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Prius Prime or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.44% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 stands out for its strong value, excellent fuel economy, and Toyota’s proven hybrid expertise.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $23,018, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $22,976 average.
- It adds a good list of standard equipment and features while keeping the same efficiency focus.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2020 is the stronger buy because it combines lower average pricing with solid owner satisfaction and standout efficiency. If you’re willing to spend a bit more for a newer model year with a stronger standard-equipment story, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative. For most price-sensitive buyers, though, the 2020 remains the smarter target.
