Why it stands out
The 2020 Nissan Versa stands out as a budget-minded small car that feels more substantial than its price suggests. Nissan made it more expensive than the old one, but the payoff is improved infotainment, better safety tech, and a livelier ride. That combination gives the Versa a stronger case for buyers who want an affordable new car without feeling like they are giving up too much.
It also earns points for value and for standard advanced safety features, which help it feel more competitive in a segment where low price alone is not enough. At the same time, it is not a performance standout, and its back seat is cramped. Even so, the 2020 Versa’s appeal is clear: it offers a more polished and better-equipped experience than its bargain-basement reputation might suggest.

Best value for the money especially on SR version. Comfortable ride n seats fuel efficient engine with much much more reliable cvt hands down. The car has so much technology that is a steal and even thoughtful ones . First new car option is perfect. Its much more attractive looks is perfect on SR. While its not an Maxima in performance its just right for daily commute. One thing I recommend is to swap out rear drums for rotors or brakes like the front. Its just my opinion in terms of improving the stopping power. It takes so much pressure to stop it and long distance too.

I think it’s a great car for the money. Has all the features like the higher end model vehicles does. Drives great handles, great and great on gas. The 2020 Vesra is a huge improvement.

How much does the 2020 Nissan Versa cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,225 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,802 |
| Year-Round High | $11,697 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,671 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.81% |
Prices have softened 3.81% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 743 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 Nissan Versa a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Nissan Versa earns a 4.71/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its great value for the price, comfort, and impressive fuel efficiency, and many note that it offers technology and features usually found in more expensive cars. That lines up with the overview: you get a budget-minded small car that feels more substantial than its price suggests, especially if you want an affordable new car without giving up too much.
The trade-offs are clear, though: expert testing calls out fairly pedestrian performance and a cramped back seat. Even so, the Versa makes the most sense if you care more about value, standard safety tech, and everyday usability than quick acceleration or rear-seat space.
Only 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market still rewards careful shopping.
Is the 2020 Nissan Versa reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers especially appreciating the car’s value, comfort, and fuel efficiency over the long term. The expert drive notes also support that impression by describing the Versa as a better-equipped, more polished small car than its bargain reputation suggests.
The cost-effectiveness coverage reinforces that theme by emphasizing how much equipment you get for the money, which can make ownership feel easier to justify. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether a given car has been maintained well and avoided hard use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Nissan Versa?
At 64.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and any signs of prior repair. Because this car is value-focused, condition matters a lot: a clean, well-kept example can feel like a strong buy, while a neglected one can erase the savings quickly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S is the most basic version, with steel wheels, a manual driver’s seat, cloth seating, and a 7-inch touchscreen, while the SV adds alloy wheels, heated mirrors, upgraded cloth, and a better infotainment setup. The SR brings 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, a unique grille, automatic climate control, and passive-entry convenience, so it suits you if you want the most features.
- Powertrain: The Versa uses a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT. Output is improved over the previous generation, and the CVT is standard on the SV and SR, while the S is the only trim with the manual transmission.
- Safety package: Standard driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams, along with a reversing camera and front- and side-impact airbags. Those features are standard across the lineup, which is a major advantage for a budget car.
- Infotainment: The base car has a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, Siri Eyes Free, a hands-free text-messaging assistant, and three USB ports. The SV adds NissanConnect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus an upgraded instrument display.
- Fuel efficiency: With the manual transmission, the Versa returns 27 mpg city, 35 highway, and 30 combined. With the CVT, it returns 32/40/35.
Which 2020 Nissan Versa trim should I buy?
The 2020 Nissan Versa is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SV, and SR.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the cheapest way into the Versa, but it is also the most stripped-down. You still get a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, a hands-free text assistant, three USB ports, and the standard safety suite, but the cabin and equipment list are basic enough that it is hard to recommend unless price is your only priority.
- SV: This is the best-value trim. It adds alloy wheels, heated mirrors, upgraded cloth, NissanConnect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a more useful digital instrument display, giving you the strongest mix of price and content.
- SR: This is the most feature-rich version, with 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, a unique grille, automatic climate control, and passive entry. It makes sense if you want the most convenience and appearance upgrades, but the SV remains the smarter buy for most shoppers.
Standard advanced safety features are included across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Nissan Versa?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 743 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.81% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,802, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Nissan Versa's resale value?
The current average of $11,225 sits slightly below last year's $11,671.
That softer pricing suggests the Versa is still affordable to buy, but it also means future sellers may not see strong appreciation. If you buy one now, you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim rather than on market momentum alone.
The good news is that value-oriented cars with strong equipment and broad appeal can stay relevant with budget shoppers. If you keep the car clean, well maintained, and accident-free, you improve your odds of holding onto more of its value later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Nissan Versa safe?
The 2020 Nissan Versa earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
It comes standard with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, a reversing camera, and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags. Nissan also includes Easy Fill Tire Alert, which is a useful everyday convenience feature.
That standard safety package is a major strength for the Versa, especially at this price point. The main caveat is that you should still verify the condition of any used example carefully, since prior damage can undermine the protection and value you expect from a budget car.
Should I buy a 2020 Nissan Versa or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.81% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 Versa stands out for its improved infotainment, better safety tech, and livelier ride compared with the old version.
The bottom line: The 2020 Versa is the right pick if you want the newest version of this redesigned, better-equipped small car and you value standard safety tech and strong owner satisfaction. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully for a lower-priced example, but the 2020 model year is the one that best balances value, equipment, and everyday usability.
