CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Nissan Versa
overall

Summary
With 653 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,417.00, 25.9% of 2020 Nissan Versas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Nissan Versa 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
63.9% of 2020 Versa models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Nissan Versa stands out as a budget-minded small car that feels more substantial than its price suggests. Nissan made it more expensive than the old one, but the added cost is justified by improved infotainment, better safety tech, and a livelier ride. That combination gives the Versa a stronger appeal than a bare-bones economy car, especially for buyers who want a new vehicle without giving up the basics that make daily driving easier.
Its biggest strengths are value and standard advanced safety features, which help it feel like a smarter buy than its low-cost reputation might imply. The 2020 Versa also benefits from comfort and impressive fuel efficiency, according to owner feedback, and many drivers appreciate technology and features that are usually found in more expensive cars. Those qualities make it easy to understand why it can work well for shoppers trying to stretch a tight budget.
The tradeoffs are still part of the story, though. Performance is described as fairly pedestrian, and the back seat is cramped. Some owners also raised concerns about braking performance, particularly the rear brakes. Even so, the 2020 Nissan Versa’s mix of affordability, safety equipment, and improved refinement gives it a clearer identity than many cars in its class.

Best value for the money especially on SR version. Comfortable ride n seats fuel efficient engine with much much more reliable cvt hands down. The car has so much technology that is a steal and even thoughtful ones . First new car option is perfect. Its much more attractive looks is perfect on SR. While its not an Maxima in performance its just right for daily commute. One thing I recommend is to swap out rear drums for rotors or brakes like the front. Its just my opinion in terms of improving the stopping power. It takes so much pressure to stop it and long distance too.

I think it’s a great car for the money. Has all the features like the higher end model vehicles does. Drives great handles, great and great on gas. The 2020 Vesra is a huge improvement.

Yes — the 2020 Nissan Versa earns a 4.71/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its great value for the price, comfort, and impressive fuel efficiency, and many also like the technology and features you usually find in more expensive cars. The expert review also frames it as a smarter buy for shoppers who want a new vehicle without giving up the basics that make daily driving easier.
The trade-offs are fairly pedestrian performance and a cramped back seat. That means the Versa makes the most sense if you care more about budget-friendly daily use than rear-seat space or quick acceleration.
The 2020 Versa fits especially well if you’re stretching a tight budget and want a small car that still feels well equipped. Good and great deals account for 25.4% of listings, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2020 Nissan Versa reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable, trouble-free, and easy to live with over the long term, especially when you factor in the strong value and comfort owners mention most often. The expert review also supports that impression by emphasizing how the car gives you more for your money and how its improved refinement makes it feel like a better all-around daily driver.
The same feedback also flags braking concerns, especially around the rear brakes, so used buyers should pay close attention to brake condition and service history. For long-term ownership, that makes a careful pre-purchase inspection especially important.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Nissan Versa?
At 65.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. After that, prioritize a hands-on inspection of the body, brakes, and interior condition so you can separate a clean, well-kept car from one that has been repaired on the cheap.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S is the most basic version, with steel wheels, cloth seating, a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, remote keyless entry, push-button start, and a manual driver’s seat. The SV adds alloy wheels, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, upgraded cloth, an armrest, satellite radio, smartphone connectivity, and a more capable infotainment setup. The SR adds 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, a unique grille, automatic climate control, and passive-entry keyless access. The SV is the best-value choice because it adds the most useful upgrades without pushing the price as high as the SR.
- Powertrain: The Versa uses a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine with 122 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. You can get a 5-speed manual on the S, while the SV and SR come with a CVT. The CVT is the better fit if you want easier daily driving and stronger fuel economy.
- Safety package: Standard driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. You also get a reversing camera, front- and side-impact airbags, and Easy Fill Tire Alert. These features are standard across the lineup.
- Infotainment: The base setup includes a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, hands-free text messaging, and three USB ports. The SV adds NissanConnect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus an upgraded instrument display with a large color screen.
- Fuel efficiency: With the manual transmission, the Versa returns 27 mpg city, 35 highway, and 30 combined. With the CVT, it returns 32/40/35.
Which 2020 Nissan Versa trim should I buy?
The 2020 Nissan Versa is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SV, and SR.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the cheapest way into the Versa, and it gives you the core safety and tech features, but it feels stripped down compared with the higher trims. You should only choose it if your budget is extremely tight and you’re comfortable giving up some convenience features.
- SV: This is the best-value trim. It adds alloy wheels, heated mirrors, better smartphone integration, a more useful digital instrument display, and a nicer overall feel without jumping all the way to the top trim.
- SR: This is the most feature-rich version, with 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, automatic climate control, and passive-entry keyless access. It makes sense if you want the most upscale Versa experience and are willing to pay more for it.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Nissan Versa?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile deals.
- Deal availability: 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 680 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.19% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,837.54, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Nissan Versa's resale value?
The current average of $11,553 sits slightly below last year's $12,185.
That softer pricing suggests the Versa has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stays steady. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in clean condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell.
The model’s strong value reputation also helps support demand among budget-minded shoppers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Nissan Versa safe?
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
For 2020, the Versa adds standard automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. It also includes a reversing camera, front- and side-impact airbags, and Easy Fill Tire Alert.
That standard safety equipment is a major strength, especially for a budget car. The main caveat is that the added driver-assistance hardware can raise repair costs after even a minor collision, so you should pay close attention to accident history and bodywork quality when shopping used.
Should I buy a 2020 Nissan Versa or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.19% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model brings a stronger mix of value, standard safety tech, and improved refinement than the older Versa.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety equipment, and everyday livability, the 2020 Versa is the better path to consider. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still find appealing listings, but you should be selective about condition and history so you do not give up the savings you’re trying to capture.
