2020 Jaguar XE test drive
overall
With the freshened 2020 Jaguar XE, practicality takes a back seat to style, speed, and singularity.
With the refreshed 2020 Jaguar XE, the proudly British brand again attempts to make its mark in the compact luxury sport sedan segment. Unfortunately for Jaguar, this year’s updates don’t address all of its shortcomings, and people shopping for a car like this enjoy a wealth of compelling alternatives. Nevertheless, if you want something undeniably stylish and enjoyable to drive, and you don’t want to see the same exact car during every commute, the updated 2020 XE deserves consideration.

Reviewed a 2020 Jaguar XE on Dec 2, 2023
I believe the score has a nice features and a good price but the fact that it is a diesel turbo is cost for concern . There is a belt in the drivetrain of this car that can fail, leading to catastrophic engine loss. This is according to reviews that I have read online. It does not mean that this is a bad car, but it does mean that there are serious risks to ownership and extra caution and knowledge is required on the part of the owner.

See more price trendsIs the 2020 Jaguar XE a good car?
The 3/5 user rating and 6.5/10 expert rating point to a car that appeals more to your taste than to broad-market practicality. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
The 2020 Jaguar XE is aimed at you if you want a compact luxury sport sedan that feels distinctly British, looks different from the usual commuter traffic, and still delivers an enjoyable drive. Its refreshed styling and reworked cabin help it feel more special than many rivals, but the trade-offs are real: the car’s poor fuel economy, limited cargo space, and unintuitive technology keep it from being an easy all-around recommendation. The 26.4% good-or-great deal share suggests you may find some market value if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Jaguar XE reliable?
The 2020 XE’s appeal is tied more to character than to long-term peace of mind, and the available information leans that way. Jaguar’s Elite Care warranty, roadside assistance, and free maintenance programs help soften ownership concerns, and the car is presented as a good compact luxury sport sedan if you can accept its quirks.
The performance notes also suggest a car that can be satisfying but not especially polished over time: the chassis can feel stiff over sharper bumps, the cabin can creak on rougher roads, and the driving experience is enjoyable without being truly effortless. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is less about outright failure and more about living with a car that may continue to feel fussy, expensive, and less refined than you expect.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Jaguar XE?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper paper trail. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the cabin electronics, driver-assistance behavior, and suspension feel, since the car’s technology and ride quality are both part of the ownership experience. Also pay close attention to how the car has been optioned, because the XE’s appeal changes a lot depending on equipment.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup centers on the XE P250 S and the XE P300 R-Dynamic S. The P250 S starts the range with rear-wheel drive standard, while the P300 R-Dynamic S adds more power and AWD. The cabin is reworked for 2020 with upgraded materials, improved storage, revised controls, new seat designs, and a new steering wheel.
- Powertrain: You get a 247-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in the P250 S or a 296-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in the P300 R-Dynamic S, both paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The P300 is claimed to reach 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, and the car is not terribly fuel-efficient, with an EPA estimate of 25 mpg combined and a tested result of 20.3 mpg.
- Safety package: The standard package includes a reversing camera, a distracted-driver monitor, low-speed automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and front and rear parking sensors. Blind-spot monitoring and a 360-degree surround-view camera are stand-alone options, while the Park Pack and Drive Pack add blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, high-speed automatic emergency braking, rear traffic monitoring, and semi-autonomous parking assistance.
- Infotainment: Jaguar’s InControl Touch Pro Duo system is the main setup, and the available 12.3-inch digital instrumentation is a highlight. Wireless smartphone charging is available for 2020, but the system still lacks natural voice recognition, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto does not handle every vehicle function.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the XE should get 25 mpg in combined driving, and testing returned 20.3 mpg. The car is described as not terribly fuel-efficient.
Which 2020 Jaguar XE trim should I buy?
The 2020 Jaguar XE is offered in 2 trim levels: XE P250 S, XE P300 R-Dynamic S.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The XE P250 S gives you the core XE experience, but you give up the extra power and standard AWD of the higher trim. It also starts from the simpler end of the lineup, so you should expect fewer of the more desirable performance and luxury touches.
- Sweet-spot trim: The XE P300 R-Dynamic S is the better pick if you want the XE’s personality at its strongest. It brings the more powerful engine, AWD, and the more assertive R-Dynamic setup, which fits the car’s style-first mission better than the base version.
- Premium/top trim: The XE P300 R-Dynamic S is the most compelling choice here because it combines the stronger powertrain with the more upscale presentation and the features that make the XE feel special.
The safety package is worth paying attention to either way, because blind-spot monitoring, the surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control, high-speed automatic emergency braking, rear traffic monitoring, and semi-autonomous parking assistance are not all standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Jaguar XE?
This is a selective-buyer market: there are enough listings to shop from, but you should still be picky about condition, equipment, and price.
- Deal availability: 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 53 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 81.1% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2020 Jaguar XE safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety package includes a reversing camera, a distracted-driver monitor, low-speed automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and front and rear parking sensors. Blind-spot monitoring and a 360-degree surround-view camera are stand-alone options, while the Park Pack and Drive Pack add blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, high-speed automatic emergency braking, rear traffic monitoring, and semi-autonomous parking assistance.
During testing, the adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist systems were described as needing further development, with inconsistent lane-centering behavior and overly strong reactions in traffic. That means you should treat the driver-assistance tech as helpful, but not class-leading.
Should I buy a 2020 Jaguar XE or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- The refreshed 2020 XE is still meant to stand out with stylish design and an enjoyable driving character.
The bottom line: If you want a compact luxury sport sedan with personality, the 2020 XE is the year to focus on. If you’re more price-sensitive, you should shop carefully and prioritize the best-equipped, best-maintained example you can find, because the car’s quirks and compromises are part of the package.
