FAQs
The Hyundai Ioniq PHEV is a plug-in hybrid electric liftback similar to the Toyota Prius Prime. For 2020, it gets several improvements. For starters, it gets a new front fascia, complete with redesigned headlights, a mesh grille, LED daytime running lights (DRLs), and bumper. New wheel designs, side trim, and LED taillights complete the look. You can also dress the Ioniq PHEV in two new colors: Stellar Silver and Electric Shadow.
The Ioniq PHEV carries over its existing powertrain: a 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, an 8.9-kilowatt-hour battery, and a 45-kilowatt electric motor that combine to create 156 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. A 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission routes power to the front wheels. The Ioniq PHEV achieves 29 miles of pure electric range and recharges in under 9 hours with a Level 1 charger, or just 2.25 hours with a Level 2. Official fuel-economy ratings stand at 119 MPGe in hybrid mode and 52 mpg combined on just gasoline. Hyundai also throws in the Eco-Driving Assist System and Coasting Guide to help you coax out every last bit of efficiency.
For 2020, the Ioniq PHEV comes in SE, SEL, and Limited trims. The SE comes with an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless access and start, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, regenerative braking paddles, and an electronic parking brake. Upper trims gain access to leather upholstery, a sunroof, a new 10.25-inch infotainment system, navigation, Qi wireless charging, ambient interior lighting, power-folding side mirrors with puddle lights, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system.
You’ll find new and refreshed safety technology on the Ioniq PHEV this year, too. Upper trims gain adaptive cruise control with a new stop-and-go feature, lane-follow assist, forward-collision avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, and front parking sensors. The related Ioniq Hybrid scored a Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in 2019.
The revised Hyundai Ioniq PHEV remains one of the most fuel-efficient ways to move.
