The Hyundai Ioniq Electric is the brand’s first mass-market electric vehicle. It does battle with the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Nissan Leaf. This year, it sees big improvements in styling, range, charging, and technology. For 2020, the Ioniq Electric sports a bold matte-silver grille flanked by redesigned LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, and a brand-new bumper. New wheel designs and sill moldings decorate the sides, while at the back, distinctive new LED taillights mark the Ioniq Electric’s path. Finally, you can select from two new colors: Stellar Silver and Electric Shadow. The Ioniq Electric now delivers 134 horsepower, which is a 16-hp bump from last year, and 218 pound-feet of torque. As before, all of that power goes directly to the front wheels. The battery increases from 28 kWh to 38.3, netting 46 additional miles of range, for a total of 170 miles and 133 combined MPGe. Even the on-board charger gets uprated from 6.6 kW to 7.2. You’ll reach an 80% charge in under an hour with a 100-kW fast-charging station. Hyundai offers the 2020 Ioniq Electric in SE and Limited trims. The SE includes an uprated 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cloth upholstery, heated front seats, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, automatic temperature control, keyless access and start, a cargo cover, and satellite radio. The Limited trim adds a 10-way power driver’s seat, a sunroof, leather upholstery, navigation, a 10.25-inch infotainment system, ambient lighting, and a Harman Kardon audio system. The Ioniq Electric’s safety suite is considerably better than it was in 2019. Adaptive cruise control with stop and go joins the list of standard features on the SE trim. On the Limited, you’ll pick up highway-driving assist, lane-follow assist, and forward-collision avoidance assist with pedestrian detection. The new Hyundai Ioniq Electric boasts considerable improvements across the board. Look for it to reach dealerships in the coming months.
