Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 a good car?

Generally — the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 earns a 4.28/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, advanced technology, strong performance, smooth ride, and the range of available options. That lines up with the truck’s everyday-use appeal in the overview, where it’s framed as a pickup that can feel almost like a minivan in usability while still handling worksite duty.

The main trade-offs are that the interior design and features drew mixed reactions, and advanced safety features are not standard. The expert review also points to a rougher ride on the off-road-focused AT4 setup, which is worth keeping in mind if you want more comfort than trail capability.

The expert review also emphasizes straightforward controls and a simple, easy-to-use setup, which supports the sense that the Sierra is built to be lived with rather than fussed over.

At the same time, some owners reported engine-related frustrations, including oil burning and recalls, so you should pay close attention to maintenance records and any completed recall work before buying used. That matters most if you’re planning to keep the truck for the long haul.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 GMC Sierra 1500?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on every truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks for signs of hard use, especially if the truck has towing, off-road, or worksite miles. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and whether the equipment matches how you plan to use it.

The Denali adds chrome accents, 22-inch wheels, a head-up display, navigation, and wireless device charging.

Which 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, SLE, Elevation, SLT, Denali, AT4.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the entry point, and it already gives you a V6, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, a USB port, and LED headlights. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the Sierra and can live without the extra convenience features.
• SLE: This adds an extra USB port, a WiFi hotspot, an 8-inch touchscreen, and remote keyless entry, plus access to more option packages. This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the most useful everyday upgrades without jumping too far in price.
• Elevation: This trim adds a distinctive body-color look, 20-inch wheels, black accents, heated front seats, remote engine start, and a heated steering wheel. It suits you if you want more style and comfort without moving all the way to the luxury end.
• SLT: This trim keeps many of the Elevation’s comfort features but wraps them in a more classic chrome appearance. It’s the right pick if you want a more road-friendly setup and a more upscale feel without going full Denali.
• Denali: This is the luxury-focused choice, with chrome accents, 22-inch wheels, a head-up display, navigation, and wireless device charging. Buy this if you want the most premium Sierra experience.
• AT4: This is the off-road-oriented trim, with all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, skid plates, upgraded suspension components, hill-descent control, and Rancho off-road shocks. It’s the one to choose if you want rugged capability and don’t mind a firmer ride.

The safety package is not standard across the lineup, so check carefully for the driver-assistance features you want on any specific truck.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 GMC Sierra 1500?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop around but still enough price softness to create opportunities.

• Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 6,715 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.25% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 75.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $33,080, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $33,080 sits slightly below last year's $36,056.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you’re planning to sell later, condition and trim choice will matter a lot, especially for trucks with desirable equipment and clean histories.

Because the average price has already moved down, a well-kept Sierra may hold value better than a rough one, but you should still expect depreciation to remain part of the ownership equation. Trucks with stronger equipment and broader buyer appeal usually have an easier time attracting attention when it’s time to list.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.28/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?

The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include a reversing camera, traction control, and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view camera, and front and rear parking sensors.

You should note that advanced safety features are not standard, so you’ll want to verify exactly which systems are included on any used truck you’re considering. The rear camera mirror is another useful feature to look for if you want better rear visibility.

Should I buy a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.25% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.28/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 stands out for its broad powertrain range and easy-to-use tech.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $30,926, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $33,080 average.
• The redesign made it bigger, more capable, and more useful.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $34,653, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $33,080 average.
• It adds unique features like an optional carbon-fiber composite cargo bed.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2020 is the safer default choice. If you’re focused on spending less, the 2019 is the better value path. If you want a newer truck with a few extra features and don’t mind paying more, the 2021 is worth a look.
