Used 2020 BMW Z4 for Sale nearNorfolk, VA

Is the 2020 BMW Z4 a good car?

Yes — the 4.71/5 user rating and 7.5/10 expert rating point to a car that resonates strongly with shoppers who want a sporty roadster. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the performance and handling, and they also call out the comfortable seats, smooth transmission, and powerful engine. That lines up with the Z4’s role as a small convertible built to deliver strong driving character rather than just style.

The trade-offs are clear: outdated technology and some road noise from the soft top. If you want a roadster that feels lively and responsive, the Z4 fits that use case well; if you care more about the latest cabin tech or quiet cruising, you may notice its compromises more.

With 42.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop carefully.

Is the 2020 BMW Z4 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to a car that feels thrilling, well-liked, and strong enough in everyday use that people repeatedly praise its performance, handling, and smooth transmission.

The expert driving notes reinforce that sense of confidence by describing the powertrain as eager and well sorted, with the car’s behavior feeling controlled and composed when driven hard. The cost-effectiveness discussion also frames the Z4 as a compelling value relative to similarly positioned rivals, which can matter when you’re thinking about long-term ownership satisfaction.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright mechanical drama and more about whether the car has been maintained well and whether its option-heavy setup has aged cleanly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW Z4?

At 67.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a full vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or if the soft top, electronics, or driver-assistance features show signs of wear. Focus on condition first: the Z4’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been kept, both cosmetically and mechanically.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base sDrive30i brings automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming mirrors, automatic climate control, a 10.24-inch touchscreen, navigation, HD Radio, and Apple CarPlay, but it does not include Android Auto. The sDriveM40i adds the inline-6 character and comes with more equipment already built in, making it the stronger choice if you want the fuller performance experience.
• Powertrain: The sDrive30i uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, while the sDriveM40i uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 with 382 hp and 368 lb-ft. The 4-cylinder is quick and lighter, but the inline-6 is the one that gives the Z4 its standout performance personality.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes frontal collision warning with emergency braking and traffic-sign recognition. The Driving Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning, while the Convenience package adds rear cross-traffic alert, an automatic parking system, satellite radio, adaptive cruise, and smartphone key pairing.
• Infotainment: The Z4 uses a 10.24-inch touchscreen with BMW’s iDrive system. Apple CarPlay is offered, but Android Auto is missing, and the tech discussion also notes that Apple CarPlay connection issues can be frustrating.
• Fuel efficiency: The 4-cylinder can reach 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds, and the expert notes emphasize its lighter weight and efficiency-minded balance, but no MPG or MPGe figure is stated.

Which 2020 BMW Z4 trim should I buy?

The 2020 BMW Z4 is offered in 2 trim levels: sDrive30i, sDriveM40i.

Here's the short version:

• sDrive30i: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Z4 experience with the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, strong standard equipment, and a lower starting price. It suits you best if you want the Z4’s style and handling without stretching to the top engine.
• sDriveM40i: This is the one to buy if performance is your priority. It adds the inline-6, more power, and more of the equipment that makes the Z4 feel like a serious enthusiast roadster. It’s the best-value trim if you care most about the car’s character and don’t want to compromise on speed.

The safety package is worth noting: blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning are tied to the Driving Assistance package, while rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise come with the Convenience package.

Standard safety features include frontal collision warning with emergency braking and traffic-sign recognition. Should I buy a 2020 BMW Z4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 42.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 67.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The inline 6-cylinder engine returns in M40i form, restoring the power that best matches the Z4’s sporty personality.

The bottom line: If you want the Z4 with the strongest performance identity, the 2020 model year is the one to target because it brings back the inline-6 M40i and keeps the car’s enthusiast focus intact. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, the sDrive30i still gives you the Z4’s style and handling, but the 2020’s real appeal is the return of the more powerful engine.
